Budget FS Bike: Polygon vs Motobecane

Hi all,

This year I picked up on mountain biking, and realized my cheap Costco bike is not enough. After riding my friends Vitus Sentier, I am definitely in the market for an upgrade, something that can do it all for around 2.5k loosely.

Currently I narrowed it down to Polygon T8 vs the Motobecane HAL Boost 29er. I have looked at other bikes such as the Vitus Mythique 29 VRX, and the Orbea Oiz lineup but I feel nothing comes as close to price to performance on the two bikes I mentioned.

Here is the Motobecane I am considering as a 29er.

The parts alone are worth quite a sum, the carbon wheels themselves are around $1800 new. However I do like the geometry just a tad more on the Polygon. Here is a comparison in terms of geo:

The positive with the Motobecane is I can preorder now and cancel anytime before November when it ships in case I find a better deal. This is obviously going to be a bike for next season.

What would you do in my position?

Thanks

Polygon has more modern geo, as I see it.

Can't update geometry. Get the one that will fit best.

I can't really test them out as they are more of a direct to consumer brand.
I am just under 6'2" and 200lbs so I think the extra large of either or will fit fine, but as KKMC pointed out the Polygon does have a newer geometry.
But does that in it of itself outweigh the worse price to performance compared to the BD motobecane?
Have you considered the Orbea Occam H30? I almost bought one instead of my Rallon M20.

For that price I would rather just wait for the Vitus Mythique to be in stock. I would be open to it if I caught it on sale.

Looked at the specs very quickly...
In my opinion, the Fox Rhythm is an excellent fork. I have one and love it. The polygon has a threaded BB, which I prefer, but a Press-fit BB is not a deal breaker.
Other than that, it appears the Motobecane is higher spec, mostly due to the very nice wheels (but I think SLX is better than GX, a little). The Motobecane has modern enough geometry.
You have to decide how to weight the variables.

The chainstay difference between 430 and 448.5 is significant, imo. I would not buy a bike with that long chainstay.

Rode the living **** out of a T8. Just get the polygon and go ride.

At 6'2" I think the 445 vs 500 mm reach will be noticeable. As others have said, the Polygon has more modern geometry and probably a better choice.

Polygon bikes seem like really good bikes for the $$$, always professionally reviewed to punch above their weight class. As mentioned, geo is super important to the overall performance of the bike.

For the motobecane, I guess we figured out what Niner did with all the old aluminum Rip 9 frames that didn’t sell!

I wonder if you can get that bik sdurect offer without the frame?

I'm sure it wouldn't be much cheaper lol.
That BD offer would be nice if i was planning on changing frames, but i can't really afford that :/
HTA of the polygon is 65.5 actually not 66. Wouldn't buy the motobecane, frame is dated imho. Polygon Siskiu is an amazing bike especially as an T8 version imho. Buddy of mine got an T7 (T8 sadly not available and was already a lot of stretching to get him to the T7) and the thing is great overall, especially for the price as with most other bikes you pay the listprice nowadays.

Well following the input to everyone in this thread I got the T8. Estimated ship date in September.

Thanks people!

I was also looking at Motobecane vs Polygon and went with the Polygon D7. The Polygon bikes are really well made and look much nicer than the plain looking Motobecanes...
My son just got a polygon t7. for the price i thing its a good value especially for someone just getting into riding or maybe going from a hardtail to a full suspension on a budget.. When i got the bike, i had to go get the front wheel trued up because its like they laced the wheel but never did anything else with it. The rear brake line is ran on the wrong side of the frame so i need to buy a bleeder kit and re run the line. I made the tires tubeless already. I would say if you have lots of hills or some punishing uphills i would change the chainring to a 30t. The bike is heavy and that should help you out>

Late to the thread, but I think you made a good choice. The fit on the T8 looks like a good match for you.
