I bought my son his first MTB a GT Aggressor with a Suntour XCT DS (80mm) fork. I knew the fork would need to be upgraded but I'm starting to think sooner rather than later. What a good low cost air fork option that's available with a straight steer tube. My son is very light so he doesn't need anything really stiff or beefy. I would not be opposed to going to 100mm or even 120mm of travel.

The Suntour Raidon was available with a straight steerer tube. Don't know if it still is.

Worldwide Cyclery can get the X-Fusion Slide RL with a straight 1-1/8" steerer tube.

I ordered one from them a while back and between it being on sale and them honoring an additional 20% off coupon I paid less than $300 for it. Honestly I wasn't expecting much from a fork at that price point but I have to tell you I have actually been pleasantly surprised and quite impressed it the way it has performed.

The Manitou Markhor (which is a successor to the astoundingly reliable R7) is the best option.

Xfusion enix forks are $150 shipped on ebay right now. They're very good forks.
