I'm not having much luck with bike parts - late one night I was just sitting reading and then I heard a bang, I didn't know where it came from and with some investigation I saw this.

My bikes hang on a rack, by their back wheels, so there was no stress being placed on the front wheels at the time of the "bang".

This hub is from a 2004 Fuel 98, the wheel is a Bontrager Race Lite Tubeless. It's been raced for 2 years and used for commuting to work - but I have 2 bikes so it didn't get ridden at every race or every ride.

I guess I'm hard on my bikes, I weigh around 170 lbs.

Take it to a compentent Trek store and see if you can get it warrantied.

Looks like a legitimate warrenty to me. You may get a new wheel. Or you may have to pay their mechanic to practice wheel building on your wheel.

Seen that exact thing before...

a few years back when Chris King was making Bontrager hubs. Twice if I remember right. Low spoke count + high tension= bad combination. Trek switched to DT Hugi and have not seen/heard of this happening since. I bet Trek will back there stuff up. Lucky you weren't riding. Good luck. GR

I have seen a few like that. You should be ok if you are the original owner, and can prove it if not dealing with the original shop.

Yeah, that is a warranty issue. Too bad the one year warranty is long gone.

I must have three King/Bonti hubs. two have at least 3000 hard miles on them. 28h straight pull.
My buddy's Rolf/Hugi hubs broke just like AJ541's. I have nevver seen a King break and I must have seen 5 or 6 of the Hugis broken.
