The one and only female rider in our group broke her collar bone in an endo last week. She went to the local "free" trauma center where they pretty much x-ray & send you pack'in. I broke my collar bone a few years ago & with medical insurance was able to go thru several follow-ups and minor re-hab. The "free" clinic did an x-ray and sent her home in a sling. I think she should have a follow up check, figure 8 sling, and some healing instructions @ the minimum. Any advice for her as she doesn't have health insurance and needs some instruction. I feel if she doesn't do more it might not heal correctly. I asked her about the break and she was told it was a clean break and would align itself ? Any advice would help her out. Thanx

Not much you can do.....

I broke mine a few years back, went to a friend that is a doctor and he basically gave me a sling, told me how to brace it and try not to move it too much for 2 months ( I think that was the time). Anyways, if the x-rays show a clean break, it is just going to have to heal by itself. The lump will get to be pretty big after the cartilage starts to form over the crack. Yea, it will look funny, but your arm movement will return in full. Can be real uncomfortable to bath and sleep ( get used to sleeping sitting up with arm folded across chest to other shoulder).

Total cost to me was $50 bucks for an x-ray. Oh, I live in Jamaica. Not much else you can do, don't spend too much money....not much else you can do.

Good Luck,

YaMon.

Back on The Bike After Two Months!

Broke my right clavicle two months ago going over the bars at night
http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=79725

Went to the specialist and all he said was "stay in the sling". All my friends that had similar injuries said the same thing, "stay in the sling". I didn't have the figure 8 type, just your dorky looking sling. So, I stayed in the sling.

I stayed in it for 3 1/2 weeks, then after that I just kept my arm on my lap. I was lucky that break was clean and went under the right shoulder. After 8 weeks, I'm back on the bike.

Tell her good luck,

jps

Broke mine too, about 10 years ago. Not much to do but stay in the sling. Getting out of bed was a bee-otch. She'll need help getting dressed for a while. You can probably find all of the care and rehab info you need by googling.

Tell her good luck. She's part of the club now.

Broke my collarbone and separated my shoulder some years back. Wore a sling for a couple weeks, took it easy for a couple more, eased back into things. No permanent damage or aftereffects.

Make sure she doesn't keep the area static. In order for some good blood flow, and a speedy recovery she needs to move it around as much as pain will allow for.

Take care,
Jay
