So a bad shift this morning left me with a broken chain on my month old GF Piranha. What do I need to fix the chain properly? I believe it is a Shimano chain but I'm not 100% sure on that. I have the Crank Brothers Multi-17 that has a chain tool but I don't know how to use it. The bike is a month old so I shouldn't have to buy an entirely new chain should I?

Thanks for the help. It is about time for me to take it to the LBS anyway to get a tune-up/truing etc. so if this is going to be something that kicks my ass then I can just have them do it.

Depending on what broke, you should be able to just buy a quicklink to replace the broken link.

Ask your LBS about it before you buy, because there are different quick-links for different chains.

As for installation, it is a snap...literally. The two halves slide together, then you simply slide the lock plate over the two pins...hard to explain, but once you see an actual quick link you will understand...

also often called master links...either works!
