Brilliant Sedona Riding with the Brit

1361 Views 20 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  stand-up-pride
Well I have been trying to promote Sedona riding for quite sometime now and it seems to be paying off. At the Sunday shop ride yesterday a number of tourons showed up and one of them was a professor from Oxford University. When I first introduced myself to the professor I thought to myself I hope he knows what he is getting himself into. He just didn't have the look of a southwestern rider he was much too white.

Well when I suggested to the group that we go ride H.........E and I had brought the shuttle trailer to take eight riders, the group was a little reluctant. When I told everyone I would give them $200 dollars if they would ride with me, about 80% of the group changed their mind. It is amazing how many people will be you friend if you just throw money at them. I guess I have just learned that from Tiger Woods.

Well as it turned out we had a brilliant ride according to the professor, especially since I threw in all the Hog trails for the end of the ride and took him up to Hangover today. I must say the professor stepped it up and is looking for more of what Sedona has to offer tomorrow. Hopefully he will tell all his friends back home how nice the weather and riding conditions are in Sedona this time of year.

If any of you are up here this week and want to ride with us let me know, we have about five other super fun rides on the agenda.

The check is in the mail.

You missed a really special ride yesterday. There were 8 riders in our group. One of the serious Sedona rider's was having drive train problems and hung a left on Slim Shady (to get a quick fix at the Bike & Bean) while the rest of us headed up H.........E. One of the guys in our group as from Houston and was respitorily challenged so we took it easy on the climb while waiting for the broken bike guy.

When we reached the lookout point there were three hardcore singlespeed Flagsters there also enjoying the view. They were there for the first time, so we gave them the intel on how to get off the mountain.

After taking a break we decided to head out and let the guy with the broken bike catch up. Little did we know he talked ten Arizona team racers into following him on his ride to catch up with us.

After reaching the slot we again took a short break before hearing a bunch of hooting and hollering coming down the mountain. I wish I had a camera for a picture. Everyone but our buddy had the bluing bikes and gear. At that point we had over twenty-two riders at the top of the slot.

At that point the three singlespeeders started down the slot and after about five minutes the rest of us headed down. I only wish someone would have had a video camera, that would have been an amazing marketing video for Sedona riding. When we all grouped up again at the bottom the team riders were :) :) :) from ear to ear. They said that was one of the most amazing downhills they had done in awhile. I had to agree.

Dang where's that calculator.....ok I'll do the math. Are you saying you ended up shell'n out $4400 bucks by rides end?? :D

Need a few pix to confirm the weather you mentioned.

Thx in advance.
I'm confused. Why are you paying people to ride with you? And in this economy, HOW are you paying people to ride with you? :)

They won't ride with me unless I pay them. I normally have $2,000 in 20s when I go on a group ride. Want to be my friend?

Meh, Brits are pretty decent riders, but have big heads about it. Prescott Brits anyway.

Well it was a third day riding with the professor (Ian) and what a special day it was. The forecast was for rain showers with periods of snow. For once the forecast was correct.

Not only did I do the ride with Ian, but we had a rider from Houston (Dan) join us. Since Dan did have a lot of uphill mojo we decided to do some special downhill shuttle rides.

During the ride Ian and I rode a new incedible uphill trail that has a 360 degree view of Sedona while Dan hike-a-biked the climb to the top.

At the end of the ride Dan and I headed to the Spa for steam bath and relaxing Jacuzzi.

Attached are pictures of Dan and Ian enjoying the Sedona riding experience.

TD, nice pics!!!! Hope to get up there soon with heli and ride with you. Merry Christmas!!! My girlfriend just got herself a nice bike-hope to head a little up the road to Sedona and see you soon.
Looks like fun to me. I'm going to be in town with my family next week, does anyone have any interest in showing us around or giving some trail advice? There will be 2 expert brothers, an intermediate girlfriend and an andvanced girlfriend.

Sounds good. I have been riding with the professor and hope to still be able to ride when you get here.

When someone gives a list of riding abilities like you have presented the big question is what kind of riding are you realisticly expecting to do, Intermediate, Advanced or Expert? I feel sorry for the intermediate rider if your response is gong to be advanced and expert.

Many people have posted they MAY come to Sedona to ride. I find that about 20% actually do come here. I wonder if you will actually UP the percentage or lower it.

Is Mary's Loop still your favorite ride?

Give us a heads up if you actually do make it here:thumbsup:. We (maybe only me) always try and show the non-locals around to the good stuff, unlike most other areas who keep it to themselves, we enjoy sharing.

Just got through watching the Searching for Bobby Fischer DVD it was pretty good. Wish I could play chess.

TD
Well i hope i can up that percentage!! Mary's loop is fun but wouldnt call it my favorite ride (out of any trail that is). Monarch crest trail or porcupine rim is at the top of my list.

Wil definately let you know if i make it out there. Thanks
we are looking for intermediate riding, we rode some of thunder mountain and chimney rock from the house we are staying at and for the most part it was pretty nice, although the ledgyness is a little frustrating sometimes. Any recommendations on trails that are pretty smooth flowing kind of singletrack that would be fun for everyone?
Cathedral Rock aka Templeton Trail. Winner for all levels and abilities. Plus it should be dry'ish' with less chance of ice.

Start from the Village, take the Bell Rock Pathway, hang a left on Templeton trail = fun and beautiful.

This is the ride for you: Chmney Rock to Dry Creek Road turn right to Lower Lizardhead turn right to Dry Creek Gravel Road turn left to the Girdner Trailhead ride on Girdner and turn right on Snake ride 50 yards and turn left on Anaconda follow Anaconda to AZ Cypress ride AZ Cypress to Girdner turn right on Girdner and follow that to Easy Rider turn left on Easy Rider and follow that to Plumbers Crack turn left on Plumbers Crack and follow that to Color Cove follow that to Dry Creek Road. From that point you can either turn left and hit Chimney back to your house or turn right and ride the Thuder Mountain Rd. back to your house.

If you have any difficulty finding the route I might be able to send my wife out to show you the way. She will require you to buy her a Whopper Jr., fries and diet coke at Burger King for showing you the way.

Let me know.

Otherwise you can take: Chmney Rock to Dry Creek Road turn right to Lower Lizardhead turn right to Dry Creek Gravel Road turn right to Lost Watch turn left on Lost Watch follow that to Touron follow that to Chuck Wagon turn right on CW and follow the to Lost Watch turn right and follow that to Long Canyon Road follow that to Deadman's turn left on Deadman's follow that to Boyton Pass Road follow that to the Dawa trail follow that to the OK trail turn left on OK and follow that to AZ Cypress at this point you can take the following:

AZ Cypress to Girdner turn right on Girdner and follow that to Easy Rider turn left on Easy Rider and follow that to Plumbers Crack turn left on Plumbers Crack and follow that to Color Cove follow that to Dry Creek Road. From that point you can either turn left and hit Chimney back to your house or turn right and ride the Thuder Mountain Rd. back to your house.

OR hit Anaconda and turn left and ride to Snake to Girdner to Dry Creek Road turn right and ride to Chimney Rock and back to your house.

If you have any problems following those instructions maybe I can get my wife to show you that ride also. That is potentially a longer ride so you would need to provide some Clif bars for her during the ride plus the Whopper Jr., fries and diet coke at the end.

Let me know if you have any questions on the routing. Epic Rider has been wanting to GPS a lot of those trails for his Sedona GPS map and maybe he would like to go out with you guys to get some new trails for his map. You might want to get in touch with him and he could maybe help you out.

If anyone in you group wants a more advanced ride I could show them a ride that some have said "that was one of the most cool trails I have ever ridden".

Until Epic Rider gets his map updated this map might be of some help. Also this link might provide useful info. http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=535280
