All,

Looking into getting new brakes.
I currently run SRAM XX brake set.

Any recommendations as far as a reliable and powerful brake set which would also be light weight? - I am currently building a new bike ;)

Thanks!

XTR Race brakes. Less problematic than the SRAM XX too. Or for bigger bucks, the Magura MT-8 (or MT-6 to save a few bucks)
What about the weight differences between the brakes? e.g. XTR race vs. the MT8s?
Can you also recommend rotors?

thanks!

I'd use XTR ICETech rotors with the XTR and the Storm SL rotors with the Magura.MT-6 or MT-8.

I think the MT-8 are lighter than the XTR and the MT-6 are heavier. There's a fairly recent post with the Magura weights. Here's the XTR weights

I have been riding with the XTR trail brakes with ice tech rotors for a little over a year now. Still loving it!

Weights for MT8:
Front Lever caliper, lines and bolts, 179.4 g, Storm 160 mm rotor 96.4 g, 6 Ti rotor bolts 7 g
Rear Lever caliper, lines and bolts, 191.4 g, Storm 140 mm rotor 75.4 g, 6 Ti rotor bolts 7 g
IS-PM adapter 14 gr 2 Ti bolts 8 gr
Front 282.8 gr Rear 285.8 gr Total: 568.6 gr
I had the Storm before the MT series came out, so I kept using Ti bolts instead of the Al bolts supplied with newer versions, a couple more grams but I feel it more safe.

I did the math according to info on this reply and on bikerumor.com

I have a center lock hubs - so for me it would be about 85 grams difference between the XTR Race and the MT8. And this, of course, not to be taken lightly. If I would not needed the adapters from 6bolts to CL it would be 85+58=143gr difference.

The current rotors I have are the SRAM XX HSX Center Lock rotors. 120gr each.

Sram has a new brake for 2013 but I am not sure if I really would like to use those... although my XX brakes did not ever failed me.

i don't have a weigh scale to take pics of them, but I have been extremely pleased with these Hygia brakes. I tuned them with alloy bolts, aluminum backed brake pads, and lightweight housings, Been running them for about a year now, and they've been maintenance free. (I replaced the brake fluid when I switched out the hyd. housings.)
