Please help any advice appreciated. My 2010 giant xtc 29er 2 came with shimano alivio, my bike shop offers to swap my brakes for avid elixer 5 white for $100. Should I keep my bike with the stock brakes or switch to the Elixer 5? My bike is still brand new.

I generally dislike the avid hydros as they feel spongy and lack bite. My preference would be to stay with your basic Shimano brakes or make a real upgrade to something like a hope/formula/magura or high end shimano.

Stay away from Avid!

Keep the brakes the bike came with. If they are not strong enough, upgrade to a higher grade Shimano brake like SLX, or XT. See if the LBS will upgrade with Shimano.
