The brake shifters on my wife's bike, stock 2003 Specialized Hardrock with Shimano shifters, easily down shifts but are really tough to push the thumb shifter to a higher gear (takes quite a bit of force). I was thinking the best bet would be to change the cables and see if that solves the problem, but then I thought that if the cables were that bad, wouldn't it be difficult to shift either direction? Any ideas on how I can fix this problem? Thanks...

That is what I was thinking too. So, I'll probably change the cables first (full length housing) and see if that fixes the problem. If not, would an avid rollamajig really make that much difference? I've never known anyone to use one. Also, is there anything in the shifter itself that could be the problem? Thanks again...
