Brake Cable Snapped

The front brake cable on my Avid Mechanical snapped while I was riding. It broke cleanly at the attachment to the fork. The brakes were installed by my LBS four months ago on my new Fisher 293. At the time it broke my bike had 1600 miles on it. I weigh 190 pounds and my riding is done mostly in Ohio and Michigan, so no extended downhills. I am wondering how common this kind of sudden failure is and if any cable or system is less prone to this. The brakes worked well until they snapped but now I am not too confident in them. Any recommendations ?

Brake cable failure is a very rare event. You certainly can't blame the brake for a bad cable.

Check the cable anchor clamp for sharp edges. Not much else other than a mis-installation could cause it.
