Last March I was getting money together to buy a nice mountain bike to cut down on fuel costs and get more excersize. I had budgeted $500 and was really looking around to see what I could get... when the transmission in my truck went out. Obviously, I spent the money fixing my truck instead of buying a bike, but I never stopped looking.

That summer I lost one of my jobs and had my income cut in half, I started selling off or giving away tons of stuff to pay off bills and reduce my monthly obligations. I got to the point where I was comfortable again, bringing in half as much, but paying out half as much. Still no money to spare on a bike though.

Last month I sold an engine I'd been saving to put in my other Jeep. I put the money aside and didn't do anything with it until this week when I stumbled on an ad in the local Craigslist:

"Iron Horse Bike- $250" I called them up and got directions, then took a good long look and quick test run around the neighborhood.
It's a 2003 Iron Horse Warrior Comp that has been ridden only twice, and stored in the garage ever since. It was shiny clean and everything is tight and crisp, with the exception of the soft Manitou Axel Comp 100mm fork, of course. I liked it. I was looking at bikes equipped with this sort of gear last year that cost twice as much. I made it mine, and will be testing it out at the local park tomorrow morning

On a side note, I also picked up a 14' Hyperform Prijon Kayak with paddle for $100 from another Craigslist ad. I've been looking for a kayak like this for 5 years now. :D '07 is looking up, provided I don't break my neck, get hit by a car, lost at sea, or eaten by a shark...

craigslist and ebay can fantastic places to get a good bike cheaper than anywhere else. but theyre also a good place to get ripped off. i dont advise either for someone who doesnt really know what to look for, but for those that do, the deals can be great. in 2004, i got a never ridden 2003 jamis dakar xc comp for $620, its MSRP is 1495. it was in pristine condition. Find me a bike shop that can beat that and i wont shop on the net again.
