Hey, I'm so stupid man. I don't know anything really about mountain bikes and I've just recently tried to start learning about my bike and maintaining it. I purchased a RaceFace Evolve DH x-type crankset for my bike which has the square bottom bracket... it's a Shimano Deore LX set up.

So I guess I need a new bottom bracket to use the crank right?

Yeah I actually believe now that they come with the bottom bracket; you are right. so I don't need a new one. But you're saying not all bottom brackets will fit all bikes? O_O

I have a K2 Flyin' monkey frame, I think it will fit right?

you probably have a 68 or 73mm bottom bracket. Depending on which you add/remove spacers that came with the bottom bracket. Do you not have instructions from the cranks..?

from pricepoint
" The BB shell is the frame tube into which the BB threads. It will measure 68mm, 70mm or 73mm wide. Measuring the shell is easy. Flip the bike upside down and use a metric ruler or calipers to measure across the shell on a line parallel to the BB spindle. Do not measure any of the old BB if it protrudes beyond the shell. This measurement will also determine which threading your frame is likely to have. 68mm & 73mm shells have English threading while 70mm is Italian. "

They haven't come through the mail yet, expected delivery on Tuesday. Thanks for the info though. I do have Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike maintainance so I think I'll be able to change it alright, I'm not mechanically impaired either.

I'd have to purchase a
crank puller, $15 at my lbs.
X-type can be put on the bottom bracket just using hex tools though I think right?
I do have the right hex tools.

BBT-9 $19
BBT-2 $14

For the bottom bracket it'd be 33 in tools... or I could get the bike shop to change it for $25. I'll probably get them to do it.

The dude said he'd charge 25-35 to change a crankset and then I asked him about a bottom bracket and he said that's another charge so it's about 55$ total.

I wish they'd let me just use their tool for one time! Like a rental fee! gosh, they are expensive to get to do repairs for me.
