So I bent the hell out of my front Duster on my 2010 HiFi. Probably happened on a tough OTB during a technical descent. I took the wheel to a local Trek dealer shop that did good truing work for me in the past. I'm trying to do my own maintenance but wheelsmithing is something I have zero confidence or ability in. They say the rim is bent really bad and its essentially toast. I believe this, me and my riding buddy could tell just looking at the wheel sitting still that it was bent bad, much more force and it probably would have been more of a taco.

I didn't really consider the wheel warranty until later. Problem is I mentioned crashing when I first came to the shop. When I asked about warranty later they said Trek won't warranty a crashed rim. The bike was purchased at a shop 2+ hours away. I could try to get back there but I don't really have a spare wheel since my HT wheel won't work for this bike. I don't know how soon I could get to the original shop.

There is a second Trek dealer nearby, but their customer service is generally worse. Both shops build decent wheels though, and I have a WTB rim that's in decent shape. I was thinking of just paying one of them to build the other rim around my stock hub from the Bonty wheel.

I guess my question is, would it be worth it to try getting a warranty claim from a different shop and acting like no crash was involved? Or will Trek/any dealer turn me down when they see a bent rim since its probably obvious it is a wreck and not a wheel failure?

Really???

YOU are what is wrong with society as a whole. YOU messed up and want someone else to cover for YOUR error. SACK up tool, and realize how crappy you are. Cheap and crappy. Just so you know, the mechanics in the shop 100% know you are a tool and most definetly talk mad $hit about you when you leave.

Doesn't matter, they are taking my functional WTB rim that was serving no purpose at the moment and lacing it up on the stock hub. Cheapest option for me I guess. Just kind of sucks that I haven't owned the bike that long and I already "dusted" a rim.

Oh well, its still a sweet frame which is what counts for the most I guess. And I guess any crash I should be happy not to get hurt, one rim, a shredded bite valve on my camelbak and some scrapes and bruises, could be a lot worse I guess. I was proud that I instinctively pulled my arms to my chest instead of sticking my hands out.

And yeah, I felt bad about my attitude towards the situation after posting, but I figured it was worth an inquiry on how others would approach this. I've never actually bent a rim that bad before, and if I ever had a wheel warranty active before I didn't know about it. I don't want to take advantage of anyone, but I just bought that bike new and I've been trying to spend less on the hobby overall lately and do more of my own maintenance. The way it went with the shop was, I took the wheel in, they said "yeah it looks like its toast but let us put it on the stand anyway and call you." When I talked again on the phone I asked if there was any way the warranty might apply and they said no. I knew in my heart what the result would be, but I thought I'd ask here where there is combined years of experience dealing with repair and warranty issues.

I know it sounds like I'm trying to pull one over on someone, but after this thread confirmed what I already knew but was having a hard time coming to grips with, I just told the shop I'm using that I wanted a wheel built. Maybe they are talking **** about me, but they seem pretty nice. I'll see how solid their building is, they seem pretty good from what I can tell. I really never got pushy with them or anything, just figured it was worth mentioning the warranty before I proceeded.
