I just picked up a bike off of eBay that came with a Bontrager RXL wheelset (26"). The Merlin ti frame complete with XTR components is really nice but the Bontrager RXL wheels have me a little concerned... In the past I have always used Stan's rims attached to very nice hubs (Hope Pro II, etc) and am I wondering about rim weight and hub strength on the RXL's? Does anyone out there have any experience with this wheelset?

As always, I appreciate your thought's and opinions :)

Do you know the year of the wheels, or have photos? Until a couple of years ago, the RXL's had rebadged DT 240 hubs. Good rims, a good solid wheel set. I'm partial to a conventional handbuilt wheel, but if I were considering a wheel system wheel, the old RXL's would have been near the top of the list. The new ones I believe still use DT's star ratchet design, but they are manufactured by Formula for Bontrager. They have had som QC issues with those hubs. Still good rims though. Easy tubeless for either generation.

They do not use the Star Ratchet anymore with the Formula Hubs...it is a standard 3 pawl system. Nice scandium rims, good DT spokes, but the hubs are the question

Yeah, the wheels I have look exactly like the ones posted in the photo above. So with that in mind, are they worth using or should eBay them? I have not had a chance to weight them, so what are your thoughts - are they light & durable or not so durable?

Thanks!
