Bontrager buy

I just picked up a 96 Bontrager Race off Ebay, frame only and it's on the way. I assumed that any bike built in 96 would have a 1 1/8 steer tube, this is a frame only. Now I'm reading about all these Bontragers with 1" forks. Are the 96 models 1" or the more common 1 1/8"?

Sounds like a Trek built Privateer. Do you have any photos? Others will know more.
if it's a bontrager race it's a 1in headtube.
The only Bontrager with at 1&1/8" was the '98 Privateer. Everything else was 1".

Not sure how asking what the steer tube size for a 96 Race would imply it's a Privateer. Also not sure if it's a 96, just going off Bikepedia and info off the "Offical Bontrager" thread and associated links. Color is a dark blue with the later decal scheme which I could only find available in 96. Seller claims it's a Santa Cruz built frame and it's a XXL(21" c to c, 23.5" c to top, I didn't know they built privateers that big. Here's some pics.

Since bidding is closed, a link to the auction might be helpful.

Cause the Bonty guys around here do little else other than dream, eat and sleep Bonty's. That's like going to Italy, and wondering why they know so much about Italian food:D

Nice frame too, BTW, go ride the snot out of it!
Was Gary the seller?

Looks like his recent auction.
Looks just like mine. A Race. '96 sounds right. 1" headset for sure.

Privateers didn't have the gussets on the downtube/bb.

Got mine NOS on the 'bay also. Medium. LOVE IT.

But now it has a FAT one inch rigid fork on it. Not that I didn't like the "zoke, but now it just feels "right".

I think the other responder misinterpreted your question as stating that it had a 1&1/8" headtube rather than asking whether it should. Definately SC made and 1". The color and decal scheme should have been availble for more than '96. It's always hard to pin down the year on these but it looks like you have the one-piece stays which would make it a later one. Roughly '95 or later.

There were a couple XL Bontys at the RideSF Swap Meet. Looks like one of 'em.
