Bolt -on to QR conversion

Quick question, do I need a Surly specific kit to switch my bolt-on front hub over to a QR, or can it be done with a generic (and/or salvaged) hollow axel ?

I'm finding that keeping the disc brakes aligned with the bolt-on hub is a royal pain.
