I most likely have hypertension. My average resting BP is 150/100 though it is sometimes higher. I am 39.

I already eat healthy, exercise and use no salt.

I am seeing a doc in a couple weeks. If she suggests medicine I will take the suggestion.

My concern and reason I am posting here is that I want the one that will have the least side effects that will effect my riding or general exercise ability.

I see there are quite a few types of BP medicine so I was hoping some folks here could help narrow them down.

I am going to get more strict with my sodium intake the next couple weeks. Maybe that will bring it down a bit. High BP runs in the family.

Thanks!

Let your doctor decide if you need to be on medication and what would work best for you. On another note, I'm 30 with a similar blood pressure to yourself. I have been atenolol for a couple of years without any problems. But, like I said there are many of options and your doc will know whats best

High bp can be caused by many different mechanisms and bp meds are prescribed for the type of cause you have. A good md will diagnose and prescribe the correct med for you. I would just make sure to ask about side effects so you know what to expect. Your bp is pretty high so best to get it under control. Good luck.

Marijuana. Bong, joints, brownies, whatever—the **** works wonders.

Oh wait, you might not be in California as I am. Therefore you might want to try something man-made in a laboratory (with un-advertised side effects) that costs $285% more via a valid health insurance plan. Nevermind.

Seriously, spark up a fattie, your hypertension-related fears will be kicked in the nuts.

But, if you do not suffer from male pattern baldness, then surely your wife/girlfriend will find a way to reduce your blood pressure if you decide to steer away from the 1980s San Francisco look and grow your hair back on your head.

Don't use a Beta Blocker hypertension med(Atenolol, Metoprolol, etc...they will suppress your max heart rate and limit your riding endurance profoundly. Only take a ACE inhibitors, ie; Vasotec, Altace, etc.

I've been using Cozar for a few years now and it helps to me it seems to not slow me down at all like some friends that use other drugs for BP

How much do you weigh? My BP got up there when I was around 207-210lbs or so, but now I'm below 175 and great. They wanted to put me on meds and did for a short time, which sucked, but at a lighter weight I'm much better with very normal BP.

If smoking pot lowered your blood pressure I wouldn't be taking Atenolol.

While it has decreased my max heart rate, I am not having any other side effects.
I was initially taking 50mg a day and having quite a bit of fatigue. I have gone to a half a pill a day and am doing better.

My blood pressure is normal again and that is good news.

While posting this question here is not a necessarily bad thing, I would treat any recommendations given with the utmost suspicion. Even in bike-related threads, half the people posting are talking out of their asses, and this is far more important than deciding which tire to use.

But since you asked, the leeches worked wonders for me.

OP, don't make the same fatal mistake running guru Jim Fixx did....forego regular medical checkups because he ran daily. Turned out he had completely blocked arteries when he croaked after his morning run, in 1984.

Get a thorough medical checkup, including blood work done. BTW - leeches SUCK...
