I'm thinking about getting a Blackspire Stinger chainguide for a 1 X 9 setup. Has anyone used this?

The chain will still be able to come off the ring on the top.

My bro has use an E-13 DRS and a front der, with the limit screws adjusted to keep the chain on the ring, as a makeshift single speed guide.
The stinger is designed for 2x9 setups, so the roller can move to the inside when you shift to the little ring. I don't think it would work, but I've never tried it on a 1x9 application so I can't 100% confirm.
It's meant for 2x9 w/ fd. So no, I wouldn't use it for 1x9. But you could use a fd as a top chainguide and get a single roller if you need something cheap and ghetto.

What kind of single roller would you suggest? I'm building a bike to ride on some DH trails that don't have chairlifts so it's like an hour ride up each time. I'm more concerned about something simple to keep the weight low.

Could the stinger be modified to fit a single ring?
It's the rubber roller itself that is "stepped" that allows the chain to shift up and down properly. If you replaced that roller with a single ring roller with no steps then it would probably work.

you may as weel just buy a guide dedicated to a single ring and not risk it

Even if the roller is replaced, it would still allow the chain to come off at the top of the ring.

fair enough. can someone suggest something simple and light
Gamut P20 200grams with the bash ring. Simple, light, effective.
check ebay for e-13 sts deals right now. I just picked one up for $74 and there are many more. They're older models, but hey, they're $74. just make sure you get the right chainring size/bolt pattern.

Yeah, my front derailler keeps my chain on up top.
What about an MRP 1.x? 60grams, very simple, just a top part. Would that work?

I'm getting one for trail/AM use with a 1x9 setup.
I used a stinger with a FD in a pinch...3 days of lift access trails i dropped a chain once. it was way more efficient than i thought
