Biking near Eugene

I'm visiting the in-laws in Eugene from Christmas till New Years. Needless to say, I'll be looking for plenty of excuses to get out of the house. Will it be worth it to pack the bike along, or is everything too wet/snowy? If I do bring it along, what are the best rides to do near Eugene in the winter?

Bring the bike. Weather will be clear this weekend, and maybe some next week. Bring lights if you have them. The Disciples of Dirt MTB club has Wed night rides at our secret winter trails. Folks may be riding there on Monday the 26th too, so post here if you're interested. If the weather is good, Oakridge/Westfir is 40 minutes away and I can set you up with trail info, or just go to the Trailhead Cafe in Oakridge for info on trails, including snow levels.
Thanks for the reply, Sasquatch. I failed to mention that I'm flying into Eugene. I looked into flying with a bike, and I think it will be too much trouble to bring it for this trip. However, I'm willing to rent a bike for a few days while I'm out (it will be cheaper to rent than to bring my own bike). Any tips on where to rent? I'll bring my lights too - thanks for the reminder. I'll definately try making it to the Wednesday night ride. Could you let me know when and where to meet? You can email me the info if you want to keep it on the down low - [email protected].

Rentals may be tough. There are 3 bike shops in Eugene/Springfield that might have rentals. Paul's, Hutches, and Collins, plus maybe Wheel Works. In Oakridge, Willamette Mountain Mercantile has some rentals, but not sure about the XC fleet, they cater more to the downhill rentals.
There's the potential of a loaner bike, depending on your size. Otherwise, at least try to check out the bike paths along the Willamette River thru town, and out to the West Eugene Wetlands.
Sorry to report that the only shop in Eugene that rents, Paul's, does not rent any off-road compatible bikes. I would try Willamette Mtn Mercantile in Oakridge if you go that way (541-782-1800), though I am not sure about their fleet.
Do touch base with the DOD as Sasquatch suggests.
