Bikeshops in Denver and other Denver tips...

This summer I (or we ) will be 'second honymooning' on the Great Divide. We'll fly in to Kallispell soon and home again from Denver (home is Amsterdam, the Netherlands) on september 7.
If our schedule allows we hope to have to spend a couple of days in Denver before flying home. Because I'll have to pack the bikes for flying I will need some bike boxes and I might want to do some shopping...

So, What and where are the nice/good/better & best bikeshops to get some boxes and browse for goodies? I appreciate your input!

If we have enough time I might go looking for some singletrack aroud Denver, any idea's on that as well? Once again, I appreciate you input :thumbsup:

We'll be flying on wednesday but I'll check for updates along the way...

Just plugging the shops where my buddies work...

You cannot go wrong with the Singletrack Factory in the Wash Park part of Denver or I would check out Bent Gate Mountaineering in Golden. Not only is it one of the best outdoor stores I have been too, but they just started carrying mountain bikes.

Both shops house nice goodies, good folks, and ample stuff to waste hours in

Downing and Alameda, I believe is the location. South of downtown Denver, and east of
I-25. They sponsor bike events and teams. THe place is a mini bike museum.

i have no affiliation with any bike shops, bought my bike online...but Wheat Ridge Cyclery has been EXTREMELY wonderful to me...i cannot tell you how many times they have helped me out on short notice or how many hours they have worked on my bike when i was clueless (i.e. hydraulic brakes) and most times they don't even charge me...

they will always have my business... i do like mojo too, been there a few times, cool place..

I'd recommend Turin in denver. Just outside of downtown and friendly folk. Call ahead and they will set aside a couple boxes for you. And yea, handle bar and grill is still there http://www.handlebarandgrill.com/
I'm not sure what hotels to recommend, depends what price range you want...
plenty around downtown though...
also nice bike paths downtown to get around so bring your bike lock! see www.bicyclecolorado.org for maps

Once again, thanx for all the tips :thumbsup: We are currently on route on the GDMR and have reached Helena in spite off countless mosquito's and relentless heat...A couple more questions though. We'll probably leave the GDMR in Silverthorne, west off Denver. Any idea's on how to get into Denver from there? Can we just ride in on our biker or is this extremely diffecult/dangerous with traffic and all. Could we take a bus or something like that with our bikes and stuff? Any other idea's are welcome. So far we are having a blast

You should be able to ride from Silverthorn over Loveland Pass down to a short stretch of I-70 (just east of the tunnel) to the first exit (Bakerville) and then on the frontage road on down through Idaho Springs.

The triple bypass ride takes the 103 out of Idaho Springs, climbs over an 11,000ft pass and brings you down Bergen Park. From there, you can head along the Evergreen Parkway to another short bit of I-70 to Hwy 40 which runs next to I-70 down to Morrison.

When you get there, feel free to ride Dinosaur Ridge with all your gear. It'll be a treat

Google Earth shows a tantilizing little road on the south side of I-70 getting you very close to the Hwy 40 which (after that one stretch on I-70) should get you down. The aerial photo looks like the dirt goes, but the hwy layer certainly doesn't. Hopefully someone who's ridden this could comment.

Yeah, you can actually ride from Idaho Springs to Bergen Park with no I-70 riding. Zero, zip, nada. Take the side road out of Idaho Springs, past the concrete plant (?) and you will see the path. It will take you all the way to US-40 at Floyd Hill. Some of the path is dirt, but shouldn't bother anyone around here.

The end of this story: We finished our bike-ride, about 1700 miles. We reached Denver by leaving the Great Divide before going over Ute Pass, taking FR139 to Fraser and Winter Park instead. From Winter park we climbed up to Rollins Pass at 11.660 ft. We were informed in Winter Park that the pass was closed for cars but that we could cross on our bikes. This was not as easy as it sounded (because the road down and the tunnel were blocked) but we managed to find a trail that went over the pass, down the hill and eventually brought us back on the main road again. Beautiful scenery, though, and I envy all those who are local to this area!!!

We then proceeded a couple of miles north on HW119 and then downhill towards Denver on HW72. After conquering another climb we could finally shift into high gear and stay there...Down to Denver

We had a couple of nice days (how were we supposed to know we'd wind up in Labor Day weekend ) And I paid a visit to Turin, Mojo Wheels and Wheatridge Cyclery. Nice bikepaths to :thumbsup:

To sum things up, we had a great time and I do hope to return to this area to do some more riding and the sample the awesome looking trails I saw everywhere. Untill we meet again
