Bicycle ride turns deadly after dog chase, shootingNM
Location: Cochiti Lake
Source: AP

State police say a Sandoval County man is dead following an argument with
a cyclist who had earlier fired his handgun to scare off the man's dogs.
Police say the cyclist was held for questioning and released. No charges
have been filed.
Police say the 39-year-old cyclist was riding a mountain bike northwest of
Cochiti Lake yesterday evening when two dogs came after him. He told
police he fired one shot into the ground to scare away the dogs and
continued riding.
The cyclist told police he heard a vehicle coming from behind.
The driver -- 58-year-old Scott Massey -- stopped and exchanged words with
the cyclist about the incident. The cyclist tried to leave but Massey
drove in his direction.
Police say Massey reportedly brandished a handgun and the cyclist shot him
multiple times. The cyclist then called 9-1-1 and remained at the scene
until state police arrived.

At the risk of going off-topic, here's another odd shooting:

Outraged Czech Cop Shoots at Jaywalker

Associated Press

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - An angry police officer allegedly shot at a man who ignored a red traffic light and crossed a busy street in a southwestern Czech town, authorities said Tuesday. The bullets missed the pedestrian.

The officer in Plzen, 55 miles southwest of Prague, was being investigated by the Interior Ministry for allegedly pulling his gun and firing at the jaywalking pedestrian on Monday, ministry spokesman Petr Vorlicek said.

The unidentified officer fired several rounds after the pedestrian did not react to his shouts of protest, officials said.

The Pravo newspaper reported that the policeman first shot in the air, and when the pedestrian did not react, he allegedly aimed at him and fired two more times.

One bullet hit a passing car, but nobody was injured in the incident, Pravo said.

Not much more to it

Living here in New Mexico is like the wild wild west. People carry guns and aren't afraid to whip them out. Somebody called this guys' bluff and he paid the ultimate price.

Another one bites the dust.

Mr Massey's hot temper and stupidity cost him his life this time.....it's amazing he made it to 58 years old. One less jerk out there now.

Mr. Massey never pulled the trigger. The cyclist shot Massey several times. Who has the hot temper here?

The rest of the story is yet to emerge, but I wouldn't jump to the rider's side immediately; Massey's not here to tell his side of the story.

Have not read the whole story, but...

if a driver is driving toward someone in an aggresive manner, it (the truck) can be considered a lethal weapon. Consequently, shooting at the driver could fall under self defense.

Did you read the part where the police didn't file charges?

Was the guy supposed to wait until he was shot to fight back? I think that's taking sportsmanship a little too far.

Heres another one, no shortage of mountain bikers packing heat. I guess you never know when you might need a gun. Of course you need to know when you can use it. The New Mexico killing was probably justified but probably nothing would have happened without the biker carrying a gun. Here in Milwaukee we no doubt have a biker thinking he was totally justified in cranking off a shot for getting cut off.

Hmmmm...

The description of the cyclist seems a litte "gangsta." Would be very suprised it the description was, " aerodynamic helmet, yellow spandex jersey, black spandex shorts riding a $4000 bike with small, but powerful, headlight.

Maybe the headline should have read, "After being pelted with French Fries, Gang banger on low-rider bike shoots pregnant 15 year old "who don't do much."

Umm, yeah. Or maybe it would have been a different story, something along the lines of "Mountain biker mauled by dogs" or "Mountain biker shot by nutstick in truck"

PEOPLE are the problem, not guns, not knives, not hammers, not cheeseburgers, PEOPLE.
