Personally, I'd consider more than just 2 bikes.

when I bought my first full suspension back in 2003 (an '03 Giant VT2) I test rode 11 bikes that day. The VT2 was the last bike I rode and it blew my mind after not being very happy most of the day.

When I bought my 2007 Enduro SL, I test road 5 different bikes during a 2 week period, after work.

I've found that no matter how expensive or highly rated a bike is, its very possible you will hate it. Even a spin around the block is better than nothing and can reveal things about the bike.

Those Stumpjumpers are great bikes. We sell 'em, and I've liked all of the last 3 years of that bike. I don't, however, think it really compares directly with the BLT2. The BLT2 s a little burlier IMO. I would actually rate the Stumpy closer to a classic Blur. Regardless, these are all very good bikes.
I have to agree. I have thoroughly enjoyed my '07 Stumpjumper for the past 8 months. It has performed outstanding in many different types of riding. However, I'm now craving a little more travel and thus am awaiting my LT2 to arrive from SC.... :D IMHO, you'll be most pleased if you match which bike fits your style of riding and terrain.

blur would probably cost more and have better parts spec (just an assumption, specialized hubs? lx cassette? lower level brakes?).

either platform is capable.

i personally don't favor the stumpy because if i am going to ride an FS bike i want it sturdier. (like SX trail, or Nomad)

if all else fails, pick the bike based on color. that is what most people on mtbr do!

good luck!

I'm a Spesh guy, but LT2 is sweet. Also, the new 2008 SJ frame was a big improvement from the 2007. But the Pro is a sweet build and the Specialized Horst suspension is the best there is. But your boys riding Spesh will want to ride your Blur, and your boys on Blurs won't even ride the SJ to get beer. They are both durable and rugged. The SJ is a true trail bike even though is only has 120 (you probably know that) ... so hmmmmm ..... it's a tie. Sorry, not much help. Let us know what you decide. Happy trails.

"i posted in both SC forum and the S forum. Going to try to decide from the two."

With respect, this is no way to decide which bike to buy. If you're only split between these two, go and get a test on each. Whichever feels better, you buy.

MD,

I had an 07 stumpy expert before I sold the frame for a BLT1 when the lt2 came out (got a super deal). In my experience, the stumpy, even with the brain, bobbed when I climbed, where as the vpp does not. Otoh, I felt it was a little more plush on the smaller hits. The stumpy is going to give you waay better parts than the blur at that price range, and that's why I went with the stumpy over the blt1 in the first place. You'll get an ano frame, talas rlc, magura brakes, xt/xo drivetrain; it's a damn nice build.

the lt2 will no doubt be a lot stiffer, as tons of people have said the lt2 is stiffer than the lt1, and i thought the lt1 was a big improvement to the fsr. you'll get the lifetime warranty on the frame and shock. but, at the same time, the new lt2 is supposed to be the ultimate trail bike. it will cost you double for the same spec as the stumpy, but it depends on how the bike feels to you.

4k was the retail price, 2750 still sounds a bit high for an 07 bike, especially with xmas past and a crappy economy still pushing through. if you can knock that down to 2500 tax included, it would be a steal.
