I read somewhere to try to use a soap/detergent that is phosphorous free. I use gain dishwashing soap now but have seen dish soaps that say "phosphorous free" on the front label. Is it the phosphorous that causes the residue that I find on my stem bolts? At first I thought it may have been low quality bolts on the stock Bontrager stem bolts but after replacing the stem with a Race Face Turbine I am now finding similar residue on the hardware.

I use generic car soap from the auto supply. Works good. A couple of good wheel brushes help too.

I just use car wash soap that I get from Walmart, I think the stuff I have now has the McGuires brand. As far as the deposits on your stem screws, I wouldn't worry about it as long as you greased the threads before you installed them. I get some oxidation deposits on my Thomson stem screws as well and it's only cosmetic...take it back out and get it dirty and you'll forget all about it.

Or potassium deposits from riding too fast over banana peels.
