Bike prices...

From your experience, are the prices of bikes cheapest when they are JUST coming out?

I ask this because I got my 2010 4300 for under 400 from a LBS right when they were coming out... first one the shop got shipped... and now it's retailing for mid 500s.

Anyone? I haven't bought enough bikes to know how the prices work generally lol.

they are cheapest when they are trying to clear their inventory of models from previous years
for example, if you find a 09 right now it would be cheaper than an identical 10. Jenson has had some like 06 GTs on sale for like 60% off for a long time now.
Also, I have seen models increase in price after they first come out. My road bike now retails for 10% more than when I purchased it, but it is not common.
from my experience, you get the best deals on closeouts of "last years" models. i'm not sure what you're asking, but i've read posts where people have gotten up to $200 off msrp on their brand newly released 2010 model bikes that were sold as early as 2009.
i got a really great deal on my bike right after christmas. my LBS had tons of 09's (plus the christmas bikes that didn't sell!) they had to clear to make way for '10 inventory so i got mine for an incredible deal. keep in mind, patience almost always gets you a better price, so wait for the '10 inventory to start coming out!!
Um, didn't the 2010 bikes came out last June-July?
not here. i dunno where you live, but i'm jealous! '10 bikes are just coming out. it's not like cars apparently...
sucks... here they came out mid-year last year... at least thats when I got mine...

some bikes did come out in aug-sept of 2009. for example the specialized rockhoppers and stumpjumpers and cannondale F4/f5's
Another thing you may notice is that the older bikes still hold there value and are still for sale at their original MSRP price . A bike back in the day will have much better components then a bike now at the same price point.

But ya, clearance sales are great! Boxing day is a good day to go too.
Buy in the fall and save hundreds of dollars. Had I waited (bought in February) until September I would have saved 20 percent easy.

how much exactly did you save? was it worth not riding for an entire season? i'd easily pay an extra $20-40 for an extra week of riding in good weather. Thats a lot when you wait 7 months!
I suppose the argument will be true to people getting their first bike. If you already have a bike, you can wait for the deals and keep on riding good weather or not.

yes of course, then that amount you would've paid for a new bike upfront instead of waiting for a deal, will equate the amount you'd pay for the upgrade of your old bike instead of waiting for a deal.

^^ whats Boxing day? and whens that
Sorry, it is a Canadian thing and takes place on December 26. A local store uses that day to clear out all inventory at 50%.

I guess it is kinda equivalent to USA's Black Friday.
My bike retailed for 1500 and is now on sale for 1100.
My LBS did 50% off all 2009 models the week after Christmas and I got my GF Mamba for $460. Since Upstate NY's riding season is shorter I don't think many shops bring in 2010 bikes until the spring.
I run a shop in north jersey. the cyclocross bikes come out first, then the entry level mtn bikes, then as the season changes from nov-xmas to jan-feb, entry road and upperend mtn show up. By the time mar hits everything is out. If the store has a large amount of capital they get the 2010s fast.
