Okay, I am new to mountainbiking but I have recruited my 7 year old to join me in this adventure. We are having a great time. I had no idea how much fun we could have, not to mention the tranquility of being out on the trail. Hearing the sound of the tires on the ground beneath me is awesome. I can see some potential problems and that is where I need some help. Just yesterday my son took a spill and then his gears kept slipping. I had no idea of how to fix this. I managed to adjust something (I don't know what it was) and the problem was fixed but I could see how this could really ruin a good afternoon. Any suggestions on where I can learn how to repair a bike?

Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance is a great book. You might want to ask your LBS if they either have classes or will let you watch them repair sometimes.
