ok what suggestions do you have? She will be ridding paved roads paved bike paths. Not any long distances I really dont want to pay over $200 for it. Any suggestions?

If I were you, I'd check out your local and semi local Craigslists for a used hybrid that fits her. I think that would be more comfortable and confidence building than a roadbike.

And if you don't find anything, honestly go to your local big box store and find the best bike you can for the price. She won't need disc brakes, high end components or an aluminum frame for those kind of trails.

With either one you get, the only "mod" I'd do is put a skinnier slick or semi slick tire on the bike to make it more road ready.

Again, that's just what *I* would do! (And what I'm going to do for my girlfriend in the spring)

I'm sure it'll be fine. I doubt she's going to be launching herself off a set of stairs or anything. (A guy can dream, right?)

My first MTB was a big box bike and it worked fine on those types of trails. I may end up giving that to my gf.
