I like to take my road bike to work and ride at lunch. I would also like to try to get out to the trails more. At this point i don't do it very much because it is a pain and takes forever. I store my bikes down in the basement (no garage) and then have to mount it to the roof.

I currently have a 05 Grand Cherokee with a very low interior roof + sunroof. I can get the bike inside it, but both seats need to be down...but that is not an option. I drop my son off everyday and he has a car seat.

So I want to be able to keep my road bike in the vehicle and possibly my mountain bike standing up and have one back seat down for my son.

Here is another dilemma...it/they need to be secure so if in a accident they are not flying around for obvious reasons. I have thought about a Honda Element or the Mazda5 but would rather have something smaller than those. I purchased the Cherokee before I had a long commute and it is now is killing me.

I basically want a car with good gas mileage and plenty of cargo space. Anyone have suggestions? Fit, Versa, Matrix...

A Fit should meet all your needs. I've been able to get 2 bikes in and still have one seat back upright so you should be able to get one bike and a car seat in.

Although I haven't tried it in our Scion xB, I think you should be able to do the same in one of those too.

Ditto on the above. My Fit worked great for that.
