Hi people, I am having trouble deciding what bike to buy. I am an XC beginner.

So these are the competitors:
Scott Scale 50 2006
http://www.thcycles.com.au/index.php?action=productcatalogue&prodcat_id=86&prod_id=4079
Trek 6500 Disc
http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1033610&f=18
Univega HT 550
http://english.univega.com/start_bikes.asp?an=901927&link=uni_modell&loop=ALPINA_HT&kat=ALPINA+HT

Univega is the cheapest, but I don t know too much about that bike brand, I like Scott the best. Trek has a Manitou Slate fork, which I can t find on the net, so I am asking you for the comparrison of these bikes. Thanks

Assuming you've ridden them all, I'd go with the one that fits best and then the one having the best frame/components for the price. Scott makes some nice bikes, but WAY too pricey IMO.

The problem is that I can t test ride any of the bikes. The owner of the bike store does not allow that. I really like Scott s frame, and the fork is Tora, and I ve heard only good things about that fork, while Manitou Slate is the new fork, there is not much info on it.

Wow, my advice find another dealer.

All our shops basically you give them your drivers license and away you go.

Seriously, ride before you buy.

Or ride a friends.... no ride before you buy and get a better dealer.

Any advice on full suspension or hardtail for Leadville 100? I did the race in '05 on a Blur, but was hoping to do it with less weight than a full suspension this time. I'm not an expert mtbiker, but a do mostly road riding. (Also not an expert at forums - couldn't see how to create a "new topic"...sorry to barge in!) Thanks, Clayton

Guys I am from Croatia, in my town, there is only on good bike shop, but enyway, I will try.
Oh I spotted a new Merida 2007 that may be the best bike of those I have mentioned before. I have sent an e-mail to the dealer to find out the price,so I am waiting for the answer.

Thanks anyway, it is going to be Merida, or Scott, I will try to ride both of them, altough it will be hard to get the chance, this is Croatia we are talking about!

I hope you can arrange your test rides.

Please also consider that the higher end bikes need alot more maintance and work to keep them up.

This dealer will have to be your buddy until you learn the tricks, just take a look at the Everything drive train forum.

Make sure the fit is good too... Even if you can't ride the bike (that's very lame the dealer won't even let you take a few laps around the parking lot, sorry to hear that!), it's important to sit on the bike and make sure it's a good fit and "feels" right to you.

Beyond that, I guess it's just down to price, as long as the components (drivetrain, forks, etc) are rather comparable. It sounds like you are doing your homework though, so good on ya for that...

Good luck!

Cheers, Chris

I just found this 2006 bike with a 30 percent discount, so I guess I will buy it within a month. It has an all LX setup, at the same price as the bikes I ve mentioned before.

Merida Matts Champion LX

Merida is a fine brand and the bike looks ok. Thanks everyone for the reply, hopefully I will help some other newbie when I get the experience.
