Bigger Travel Kit: Worth it or not?

I have a 2002 Specialized Big Hit Comp. It has 6.3 inches of travel in the back. My question is, is it worth it to get the 8 inch travel upgrade thingymajiggy for $399? How does it perform, and can I get it anyplace else for less? Thanks.

I think it definitely depends what fork you are running. If you are upgrading to a DC fork, then it would definitely be worth it to get the extra travel in the rear. If you are using the stock fork, then I think it would feel pretty unbalanced. The extra plushness in the rear is definitely nice to have and will give you a little extra cushion for bigger drops and DH.

Absolutely agree with you MTBFreerideCT! My ride below: even 7/8 feels good, but 8/8 would be better. I just didn't want '03 Monster as they are 4lbs heavier and honestly, I don't need it.

EDIT: I got my link for 90$ from a dude who was selling a bike with it. So 100$ for the link, plus you will need a shock, say used Vanilla RC - 100$. 200 is better than 400, ha? Keep your eyes open for ebay, RM and here.

I am running a 2003 Junior t if that helps.
With a Junior T you could go either way. I would say that it would be worth it, especially if you plan to maybe upgrade the fork in the future, but any kind of DC fork will give you more confidence to go bigger and then the extra travel in the rear will benefit you.
My thoughts...

This is a really personal question. I couldn't say if it's would be worth it for you. But I will tell you that my 03 Big Hit comes with the newer link that allows the travel to be swapped from 6.5 - 8" and I never take it out of the 8" travel mode.

I personally think more travel = more fun. You can ride harder, hit more technical terrain and make more mistakes without as much consequence. Some would argue that more travel isn't need and it makes you a bad/sloppy rider. At first that maybe true, however like all things you progress and learn to ride smoother. So long story short...I'd go for it.

PS - Save some cash up after and send that RC to PUSH. Have them upgrade with the RACE package. Check'em out here PUSH Ind.
I know someone who is selling a 2003 Shiver SC for $300, considering it is about $1000 new, is this a good deal?
no go

I would say Shiver that sells for less than 450$ is dead or close to being dead. Did a research b4 bought my Monster.
