What's the best way to try this out if you've never been on a single speed? Are there single speed clubs, or do I have to rent one or find an old cruiser or...how did you all test the waters before taking the plunge?

Duct tape your shifters in a gear close to 2:1. Then go out for a spin. Try it several times. You'll find out if it is your bag baby. Then move on to a chain tensioner and rear hub with spacers (you can actually use an old derailleur to be the chain tensioner - that's what I did initially). That should work for quite awhile for you - until you have fully been bit by the bug and then you go to the dedicated SS frame. Oh then custom SS frame. Then multiple SS's. And so on, and so on (at least until the knees give out).

Oh and don't forget to ask someone about the secret SS handshake so you don't look like a poseur out there...

Pick a gear: middle ring front, around the middle of the cassette. Remember not to shift.
