I just bought a brand new 08 specialized FSR XC comp, and i would like to do some upgrades in the future, primarily making the drive train more efficient. i know that for the best performance i would have to upgrade all the components of the drive train (chain, sprockets, internals, etc..)

So my question is: what do all of you specialized riders, who wish to mod, do to your bikes?

Depends on the terrain and the rider mostly. I'd suggest riding for a bit on your local trails and determining for yourself what needs improvement. Frankly, that's a decent bike as is. You can't really be sure until you ride, and why not just replace the bits that wear out with upgrades if you really need them?

Get new tires. I put new Kenda Nevegals on mine and what a difference. I feel more confident going into turns now. Ran the captains for about 3 months and never did like them. Good looking tires but never felt comfortable leaning into the turns. Traction wasn't all that good. Put up a pic of your FSR XC.

That's what I did... I have a Stumpjumper FSR Comp 07 model...I went with the 2.3s...BIG improvement.
I had Captain 2.00 on the rear and 2.2 on the front and went with 2.1 front and rear. Wish I had gone with 2.3 on the front. But still happy with the 2.1 May change it later. Post a pic later.

heres my fsr xc.

my friend just bought an 08 Giant Anthem II, and i can tell a difference between his drive train and mine.
His suspension isnt as nice as mine, but i feel that his drive train is just more efficient.

I guess im looking to get a stiffer more responsive drive train.

Drivetrain is the least of your worries. Even the cheapest shimano stuff is really good these day, if it's not working properly than it isn't set up right. Get it tune up after a few rides and all will be good. And yes drop the reflectors + the plastic cassette guard.

I am starting to ride more AM style and I decided to go with a larger fork too...SEE pics 7 posts up...but I changed my tires before I upgrade my fork. Tellin ya, try putting on a set of 2.3 sizes. And oh, why ace the reflectors when ya don't have any tassels? LOL...sorry, had to put that in.

Yea I gave up on being a weight-weenie. I get what I need to improve my
ride. The fork weighs around 5.5 lbs. But man is it plush. No worries
now when I bomb down a hill with all kinds of obstacles plus
it's 140 mm. I think when my rear goes I'm going to
replace my linkage with a 130mm and a matching shock.

the damper seal on my Tora failed twice in two months. The second time the switched it for a Recon, which works flawlessly. Lots of people have failed damper seals on Toras.
I have heard that the 07 and back Tora had that problem but I was told the 09 was ok. I hope I don't find out otherwise but sure would like a air shock if it does. The Recon would be a nice replacement.
