hey,
Had some tubeless tires, love em, they really work. Unfortunetly, i found and EARRING sticking out of the back one and my super glue fix keeps coming off. What is the best tubeless tire sealant? I've heard stan's is the stuff, but is it hard to install, keep etc? Thanks for the advice. BTW i have mavic 823's.

Stans gizz. I think that is the only sealent unless you make your own, which doesn't sound too hard. You got the new style 823's right, if so a report on how they're holding after a while would be much appreciated.

Hmm

yes,
There is a VERY definite and noticible difference on how easy the bike pedals, accelerates, brakes, and maintains speed especially through rough sections. It feels almost like road-bikish in the way they work. A very interesting experiance, I am for sure convinced on tubeless wheels from now on. BTW they are 2004 823's, unfortunetly shipped by cambria bike even though I asked for 05's!?!?! The cool rims now are the 2005 823 and the new notubes.com(stans) bead interlocking tubeless DH/FR rim ( and availible custom wheelset builds). Very nice

SMT-- Do you notice any difference with the liquid in the tires? Like can you feel it in midair, or accelerating? Also, what is it like changing a tire that has that jizz in it? And finally, how does it go in in the first place? thanks, i know thats alot of questions.

questions questions...I got answers

no difference at all the juice spreads evenly throughout the tire. No feeling at all in midair or accelerating. Change the tire the same..nothing big... just messy

Putting the stans is easy. put one side of the tire on first...then with the valve towards the top (don't have the valve towards the bottom because it will clog with the stans) put in 2 capfulls then put the other side the tire on the rim.....fill w/air compressor.

with a tire already on..... deflate tire than pinch one side open fill with juice and then inflate

Stans goop is the best! Easy to deal with, effective in sealing tyres and works with little punctures and alike. I've used home brew and the euro eclipse stuff and its clear that neither compares to stans.

I just got a set of "2005" 823s from Speedgoat today- I specifically emailed and asked if they were 2005s or 04s. While they claimed 2005, I'm growing a little suspicious. From reading your posts I get the sense that the 05s are definitely better- what are the issues with the 04s, improvements in the 05s? and are there clues on the rims themselves that I can look for to tell me if they are the 04s or 05s? any info would be much appreciated.

the rims should not have a groove on the outside. I will take pictures in a few minutes and post them up to show the difference I have 04's and 05's

thanks for the quick photos- I got the grooves, so seems like I got the 04s. hmmm. are the 05s that much better? still building up the rest of the bike, LBS says they'll have 05s from Mavic April 26th, if 05s are "improved" I think I'll wait... thanks for the help.

they are a little stronger, but if you build them right and watch spoke tension you will have no problems.

WARNING make sure you use locktite between the rim and the part that screws into the rim. Many problems if you don't use locktite there

I use Stans with Mavic
Ex 823 ..04 model
D3.1 UST
X3.1 UST

Have been using stans for about 2-3 years now... I like it.
I find the Maxxis Downhill Tires and the Michelin 2.8's are the way to go with the Stuff.

Another important note is that u WILL need a compressor... especially for the downhill tires...
I got away without a compressor.. for a while , but that was when I used 2.0" Hutchinsons.... i was lucky

Maybe not a big issue...

yes you can, but it is better to buy a tubeless rim
If you use bigger FR/DH tires on non-UST rims. I would agree that tire bead/rim integrity can be an issue on some smaller non-UST tire and rim combos. The bigger, thicker DH/FR tires whether UST or not seem to grip just about any quality rim with great integrity. The rim strip also seems to offer a degree of safety from bead/rim separation and burping. Even a UST tire and UST rim--especially the front--can get a small separation and burping occurence under extreme conditions, like a bad landing or off-angle hit in a rock garden. I notice Stan even recommends on using a strip on total UST combos to combat just this scenario. I use a strip on one front UST rim setup that I have, because before I did this, you could occasionally see a latex "wet spot" in a really bad landing or crash situation. I never had a tire peel off the rim and go flat or even lose any appreciable air, but I didn't want to keep pushing that envelope.

All of that said, I'm sure that some of the realy big DH/FR tires probably grip rims, UST and non-UST, quite strongly without strips. The 2.8s that SMT uses would probably run on flats with no problems...LOL!...as that tire has one of the most awesome tire carcasses around. This 325 rim in the pic grips the 2.5 Michelin without any separation or burping problems. There is also a strip installed too. Several of us around here are using bigger non-UST tires and non-UST rims with strips and haven't had any problems. The angle of this pic make that 2.5 tire look a weenie 1.95 XC tire, doesn't it?

Aren't the 05 823s heavier than the 04's?

IT seems like the weight listed on Mavics site for the 05's is like 100 grams heavier than the old D3.1s and last years 823s. Am I right?
