+1 on that! The little ones boiled up, salted (I use steak salt for different flavour) and put them in little bags in your jersey.

Works for me

Soaked almonds work the best for me. I soak almonds in water the night before my ride then in the morning drain the water and allow to dry for 10-15 minutes on paper towel. The almonds chew way easier and are digested much faster.
Four of us went on a 6 hour ride last week that got harder as the ride went on. At hour 5 we were all bagged so I hauled out the rest of my almonds and divided them up. We all felt the boost and they got us down.
