I need new wheels for my road bike but can only spend $500. I'm looking for something versatile and durable.What is the best wheelset in terms of aero/weight/responsiveness/durability in that price range?

You may want to change your thread title to be refer to road bike wheels and you might get some more responses. This is also Mountain Bike Reviews so you may have even more luck at Road Bike Review. Having said that, a handbuilt built by a reputable local dealer will probably treat you best. You can pick your hub, spokes, and rims and won't have to deal with proprietary components if you run into an issue (like you would with Easton or Mavic).
