Best p!ace to get a deal on a Banshee?

3165 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Tinstigator
I'm dreaming of a Banshee but they are really a bit expensive for a poor police officer. It's really stretching the budget. But I can't get the Prime out of my mind. Where is the best place to buy a frame to build up? Are there no deals out there because of how the industry is these days? Or is there somewhere that is even a little bit less expensive? Any replies are appreciated. Thank you.

No discounts. Keep saving or looking for something used...
Used. It’s not like you could damage the bike. If you’re an XL, I’ve got a Prime frame available.
Consider a late model V2. I ride a Large V2 Phantom; If I was buying a V3 frame it would be a medium. There are some V2 complete bikes for sale on PB close to the price of a new frame.
I don’t know, man. I had a V2 back in the day. Nice bike for its time, but very different from the new model.

Fair. For the cost of entry, Banshee's V2 and even some V1s (Phantom) offer great performance.
i thought banshees were on the cheaper end already. they go pretty cheap used on pink bike, and i wouldn't have a problem buying a used one after everything mine has made it through.

I was considering XL because the geometry lines up more with other bikes I've ridden, at least reach-wise (I'm 6'1"). But after reading up a bunch, it seems Keith is adamant that large is correct for that height.
I’m 6’2. The large Prime killed my lower back. The XL is dead on. Recommended heights are so wacky across brands, I just look at the numbers compared to bikes I know fit well.

I’m with Blatant on this. I’m “only” 6’1” but have 2 XL frames — a Guerrilla Gravity and a Canfield. I love them.
But my arms and legs are long… anyway my point is don’t let the bike mfgr’s opinions necessarily scare you off — dig deeper and you may discover that sizing up isn’t a bad thing for you.

You guys are really making me reconsider sizing now. I know it sounds odd, but does anyone know of the R.A.D. measurement of an XL? How about a large?
I’m not a RAD follower, but pretty sure the critical measurement is YOUR RAD number applied to the existing reach measurements of whatever frames you’re interested in.

My opinion is RAD is interesting and possibly useable for average to short riders. The taller you are (and the longer your limbs are) it begins getting goofy.

For instance, at 6’2 with 34 inseam and +2 ape, my RAD had me on a bike that was impossibly small. Like, comical.

Did you measure your RAD using the “hold a pen in your hand and mark the wall” technique, or just calculate it using his formula? I’m not sure if I’m a RAD believer or not yet, but I did make my most recent purchase based on it. My RAD measurements showed my old bike was a bit small, which echoed my personal feelings on it. So I tried to buy a bike closer to my RAD, so I guess we will see how it works out :).

To the OP, I’ve got the RAD calcs for the prime in both the L and XL. But remember that the RAD is from handlebars to center of BB, so stem, handlebars, and stem spacers change it.

I’m 6’1”, and recently bought a size L Titan. No seat time on it yet though (still waiting for a few pets to arrive on Monday… like the IS brake mount). The Titan is larger in size large than the Prime by a bit though

I can post a screenshot of it later when I’m at the computer.

The only photo I've got of what looks even close to a complete bike. I just couldn't wait to start installing stuff, even if I didn't have all the parts here yet. The raw finish is quite beautiful, unlike the garage.

Tonight I finally finished the ridewrap (gotta preserve that raw lustre as long as possible right :p), the cables are now routed with damping foam. I just need the chainring, dropper lever, and rear IS brake mount to arrive, so I can finish up the dropper post install, and trim the rear brake hose to length, and get a chain on there. After that, we're close to ready.

And here is a screenshot of the Titan and Prime in my bike nerd spreadsheet. Each are using the same theoretical 50mm stem, and 25mm riser bar, with 0 stem spacers under it. The Titan is 4mm larger in Span (Hypotenuse of Reach and Stack) / RAD (basically Span + handlebar/stem/spacer adjustments), and 20mm longer wheelbase for each size than the Prime.

And... apparently I forgot to change the XL Titan chainstays back to the compact ones, after I was playing around to see how that changed the F/R balance. Oh well, its probably close enough :).

Gorgeous. I'll bet you can hardly wait to ride it.
Eager to see photos of its all finished state as well as hear your ride impressions.

I just wanted to comment as it might (or might not) help the OP in his/her decision. I've been going through the same thing but between Medium and Large. You guys bring it up but I want to emphasize it, body type. So I'm plagued with an inseam of over 34 inches and I'm just at 5'10" / 178cm. My wing span is ~175cm. My gut had been telling me large as that's what I've always done historically. This past year I got back into MTBing after a HUGE sabbatical. And now the reach #s are vastly longer which I think now gives me the option to go to the smaller of the two sizes. If I had a longer wingspan and/or torso I might be looking at up-sizing. So to summarize my THINKING, if you're body neutral or ape+, you can consider going bigger. If you're longer in legs and/or maybe Ape minus, consider going down and running longer stem etc.

I was initially going for a PhantomV3 and quite possibly Large. But found the Prime Medium fits a bit better (longer reach vs Phantom Medium and of course more stack height with the more travel, etc.). Banshee (and @Cary) recommended I go Medium and strictly raising the stack height with riser bar / avoid using headset spacers in an effort to preserve reach. I am going with their advice and am going to give it a shot. If it doesn't work out...all good. Had the honor of building a sweet bike and I'll have to search for a worthy rider to be the next owner :)

@Blatant appreciate you commenting on the RAD thing!! I actually subscribed to Lee's site so I could access the bikelogic fit calculator thing. Looking at my RAD angle it appears all my previous MTBs are aggressive Time Trial / Triathlon bikes, lol.. 54-55 degrees. Whereas he's recommending 57 degrees for a trail bike. Body type, it's a bit deal. I think the RAD minus and plus recommendations etc totally depend on your body type (i.e. all legs or upper torso/wingspan, etc). You nailed it.
