Looking to pick up a pair of lights for my teenage son for Christmas. I can't afford to go the Lupine route and my LBS is willing to make me a screaming deal on a combination of the NiteRider Pro 1200 Race and/or 1800 Race. So which is the best combo? 1200/helmet with 1800/bar or simply a pair of 1800's?

I think it's better to have a bit more light on the bars to enhance shadows for depth perception. But having two 1200's would be fine, just run the one on the bar at a higher output than the one on the helmet (like 900/600 or 1200/900 or something). Unless there's not a big price difference, go with the 1800's though. You'll never lack enough light no matter which way you go.

The new NR's really has nice beam patterns to boot. I owned a bunch before but never really like them. The last 3 years they really dialed their beam pattern I think. Good deal!

Went ahead and ordered the 1200/helmet with 1800/bar combination. Thanks for the advice. I'll post up after we've had a chance to use it.

Great! I think you won't be dissapointed especially if you got a good price. Like I said, I really think Niterider has their beam pattern dialed and is close to being in the same league as Light&Motion & Dinotte in this respect. I think those 3 have about the best beam patterns that I know of.
