Im trying to decide what type of bike rack to get - there is someone selling locally a 4 bike platform carrier hitch type and then a 3 bike where they hang from the frame? Anyone have opinions on which is better?

depends on your vehicle and type of bikes you're carrying.
4 bikes on a platform hitch will stick out about 6' from your rear bumper.
some bikes don't work well on hanging racks....

there is no 1 size fits all solution.

we will have two specialized crosstrail bikes and then any that friends have which would probably be mountain bikes or similar if that helps...we have a dodge truck or gmc envoy that we would use to haul with

if the bikes have a traditional, triangular frame, then hanging them will be easy and effective.
most hanging bike racks have bike arms that fold down so that they don't stick out when you're not using them and also a fold down or swing away mast that will give you easy access to the rear of your car.

If you're hauling more than 2 bikes then a hanging racks will be better. Like cracksandracks said, a platform rack with a 2 platform + 2 addition will stick out quite a bit when in use.

Another option since you have a truck, a platform hitch in addition to 2 truck bed mounts. That way you can move the platform hitch from truck to suv and just use your truck when you are hauling more than 2 bikes.

I've always hated hanging racks since I don't like anything clamping down on the frame (carbon road bike).
