Best Derailleur for Twist Shift

Hello fellow bike-parents,

The Tourney derailleur on my son's Cujo shifts fine, but the pully wheel is rubbing when it is in the largest cog. I tried dialing in the B-screw, and even tried a longer one, but it doesn't make any difference. It is encased in plastic so I can't really take it apart to investigate. I'd switch out the whole drivetrain, but my son really likes the twist shift for now, so I'm stuck with the old pull ratio. I'd love to find a clutch derailleur that I could make work, but for now a cheap-ish derailleur that I can adjust out of the cog would be an improvement. Anyone out there get rid of the Tourney RD and keep twist shift?

Thanks,
Drew

I just did the opposite on my son's bike...swapped the twist shift for a trigger shift, paired with the stock 6-speed Tourney RD. I found a company called S-Ride that makes Shimano-compatible drivetrain components. They have a 6-speed RD that might be a decent (and cheap!) replacement:

The quality of the trigger shifter is pretty good...and is a much better ergonomic match for my son.
Thanks. I'm working to convince him of trigger shifters, but he hasn't been sold when trying them on my wife's bike. Is the S-ride trigger shifter pretty easy to use?
Just swap to trigger and never look back, they will adapt quick
The old trick (I’m old) was to reverse the direction of the b screw when we added larger cogs back in the day ie put the screw (or a longer one) it in from the inside/other side. Not done it on this derailleur and you say it’s encased so don’t know if will work - but worth a look if not tried already …. It used to give a couple more mm. It goes something like this
If the longer screw doesn’t work though likely wont help.
Otherwise the chain isn’t a replacement and wrong length it is? Presumably worked once upon a time unless it’s a different cassette.
My son has a grip shift on his islabike school commute bike and also loves it and he has a high end thumb shifter on his mtb… whizzing the gears is his view on how a motorbike works … shame to kill that joy if it works okay. That has a sram x4 on it for 7 speed and works fine but may well not be the ratio you need so you’d need a sram grip shift.

PS wouldn’t any old school shimano rd work (pre-dynasys) if the tourney has worn out / springs died?. Eg Shimano Altus M310 7-8sp Rear Derailleur | Chain Reaction … I’d have thought so but I guess it would need checking if the revo is 6 speed… not sure if the Cujo is 7 or not…can’t tell from the photo.

Thanks. I don't think I can get to the B-screw to thread it in backwards on this RD, but I'll keep that in mind for the future. Regarding chain length, that was the first thing I tried, but I ended up back at the original length. Playing with it, I don't see how a shorter chain would fix this issue though...

It is a 7 speed. I'm planning on getting a new RD that actually has a B-screw adjustment, probably a Shimano or Microshift, was just curious if anyone had found one to be significantly better than the others (stiffer spring for less rattle off curbs, etc.).

Altus/Acera etc all work very well as long as the right cage length version is bought to meet the nec tooth range. Shopping around and the one above cant cost much if the one you have is truly dead. Just a last thought ... the outer cable hasnt been changed and somehow too long and pushes the derailleur forward by any chance? Unlikely.

Before I put it in the bin Id be temped to just gently drill into the plastic casing and somehow wedge something inside such that B screw does its job. Worse case it goes in trash anyway.
