Best Chain Stay Protection

5879 Views 27 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  BadgerOne
I've been using Lizard Skins chain stay protection on two of my older AFs for a while now. They do the job. My issue is that it's necessary to remove them whenever I clean these rigs as I still get grit underneath them, and... it's a pain to wash them separate, dry, and re-install especially getting the Velcro tight at the ends. I've used a 700c tube wrapped around stays in the past but I don't care for the added weight, Lizard Skins are light. I'm thinking of trying the silicon tape. I understand it sticks to itself. Any real world experience is appreciated as well as alternatives. What do like best?

Scotch® Rubber Mastic Tape 2228
Apply this where it is needed.

Yeah, I've heard of the Scotch 2228. Does it have any thickness to it? Something to deaden the blow?
3M electrical tape. 2 or 3 layers along the top of chainstay, bends with contours on frame, incredibly cheap. Also available in a rainbow of colors, if that's your thing.

Helicopter tape, aka ISC Racers tape. Use the thick stuff. After I starting using it I wondered why people still mess around with mastic tape and the canned CS protectors. Sticks like hell yet comes off clean.

Here is a shot of my current method....a cheap tube overlapped to also aid in noise control...way cheaper than a lizard skin and is :"custom" fit to any chain stay size!

Thanks Badger....I've never even heard of this stuff before! Looks like it would work great for other painted protection on other parts of the frame too!

Buy some vhs slapper tape. It looks the best and reduces chainslap noise a lot!

STFU. You can remove all that sticky cr4p as your chain wont hit your chainstay at all if installed correctly. Completely silent as-well. A no brainer.

Yep...got my set on order this week...I hope they fit/work as described. Even with my homemade current set up its not as quiet as I expect the Canadian set up to be......
In checking my Tracking number just now...I discovered they are from China??? Damn that pisses me off as I thought STFU being from Canada, it was also so made there...I usually hate crap from China...you know...the only country in the world who send train loads of their OWN citizens to an Organ Farm where they "farm Organs from their poor, to save their rich citizens and burn their remains!

This'll be fun. Quick way to get a thread locked 'round these parts. LoL. I'm not disagreeing with you, but socio-political commentary rarely stays on the rails long.

OP- I've heard awesome things about the STFU system. aesthetically I think it's an 'acquired' taste, but if it works, man who am I to argue?
I've had good luck with ultra-thick mastic tape made with little ripple-waves in it to mimic the VHS-like product. It just takes some skill and care to make. Rushing it will likely end up in wasted tape when it looks janky.

Another option is that sometimes some brands have awesome chainslap protctors that work on other bikes. I wanna say Santa Cruz makes a good burly rubber one that happens to be pretty neutral and fits many other chanstays.

Ridewrap Chainstay Armor. I used method #2, putting a strip on both top and bottom of a chainstay, and it worked out great. There was plenty leftover so I gave the remainder to my buddy who did method #3 on his FS and the result is pretty similar to the factory CS protector on my Epic Evo.

Yeah, they call it tape but it's more like a strip of soft rubber with an adhesive backing. I don't want to guess at the thickness off hand but it's definitely thicker than helicopter and shelter tape. Mastic is what I use on my DJ and it works really well.

The lightest I've used, and it's durable, is a single strip of nedical tape. I was in a pinch and it lasted for years.

Well I'm kinda new here so I'll be careful going forward...it's just that it's such a disgusting behavior from the country that makes all of our cell phones. I'd be willing to pay a little more if they were made here employing our people to make them!

I just got a whole kit for my whole bike...have not installed it yet...but I'm looking forward to be able to keep the frame/paint from getting beat up with flying debris or rocks during a ride.

It is thicker and I think I may go this route now that I know to layer it. The helicopter tape looks like a good option for frame protection.
