Built mine for a little over $2000 (now) had I not bought multiples of things like handlebars, pedals, grips, fork, tires. then it would be closer to ~$1500. Also the fact that my wheels were $300 and I traded services for them (web work/graphics design) that is included in the ~$1500 price.

Here is the best pick I have of her in current form:

Brakes: Avid BB7s with SD7 levers
Brake Rotors: Shimano RT-53 Centerlock 160mm
Cassette: Shimano XT-770
Chain: SRAM PC-990
Chainguide/BashGuard: BBG 104BCD oval bash
Crankset: Shimano XT M770 (big ring removed)
Derlr (Front): Shimano XT FD770
Derlr (Rear): SRAM X9 Long Cage
Fork: Manitou Tower Pro (White) 100mm QR
Frame: On-One Inbred 2nd Gen L (19.5")
Handlebar: Giant Connect XC Flat Wide
Grips: LizardSkinz Peaty (AWESOME GRIPS!)
Headset: Cane Creek S3 Plus5
Pedals: Shimano M530
Saddle: Charge Spoon
Seatpost: 2010 Eastom Havoc AM 27.2mm
Shifter (Front): SRAM X9
Shifter (Rear): SRAM X9
Stem: Race Face Evolve AM, 70mm
Tire (Front): Specialized Purgatory Control 29x2.2
Tire (Rear): GEAX Saguaro (non-tnt) 29x2.2
Tubes: WSS 2.0 (DIY Brew)
Wheel (Front): Stan's Flow Wheelset with Shimano M629 hub (centerlock)
Wheel (Rear): Stan's Flow Wheelset with Shimano M629 hub (centerlock)

I just realized these were old pics. Some changes since then.

Performance bike Access XCL29er
Reba Race fork, converted to U-Turn coil spring, set to 100mm of travel at the moment.
Cane Creek ZS3 headset
Titec H-Bar
LX Dual Control shifter/brake levers
Ergon Grips
XTR brake calipers, 160mm XT/XTR rotors (rear centerlock)
Bontrager Mustang NOS rims laced to Specialized Stout 9mm thru axle front hub, XT M775 rear hub
Lunar Lite tubes
RaceFace Deus chromed stem
Titec KnockPost (de-anodized)
Salsa fliplock seat collar.
Aireon ti rail saddle
XT Cassette
XTR Bottom Bracket
Cannondale Coda 175mm cranks, 5 arm compact, 20/30/42 rings.
XT M747 pedals
XTR Chain
XTR M952 rear derailleur
XT M770 series front derailleur

I probably have less than $700 into this bike. Nearly all of the parts were swap meet or fleabay parts... some from the parts bin. Some were crazy low price blowout deals from online shops. The frame was $85 on sale with a coupon. I think the frame, headset, H-Bar (on crazy sale) and chain were the only new items I purchased to build her up. Oh, and I had MikeSee build me up the rear wheel, and sold me another Mustang rim so I could build the front myself.

I haven't had it on dirt since I converted the Reba to U-Turn coil. Can't wait to try it out for realz.

I mostly built this bike to pull my kid's trailer, and to be a lightweight race bike if I ever race gears again... also, maybe for bikepacking with pannier racks as well as winterbike use.

Oh crap! I went over.
Well, my bike is the best, and I thought it was pretty cheap, but when you add it up it comes in $641 over. I did round up and didn't use any bro-deal pricing, but still...and it's going to be another 300 over when Walt gets steerers in.

Surly KM $420
Exotic Carbon fork $200
XTR / Crest / DT f. wheel $220
DT240/ Crest / DT r.wheel $450
Hayes Gram Strokers $200
Easton Monkey Lite $ 60
Ritchey WCS post $ 70
Yeti Speed grips (old school) $ 11
Selle Italia Flite (used) $ 70
XT Cranks (used) $140
Chain-ring (tends to vary) $ 35
Surly cog $ 25
Sram Chain $ 20
Cane Creek S3 $ 40
Crank Bros 3 or SL pedals $ 90
Various tires (usually Maxxis) $ 90

Hopefully I'm not disqualified, as I did use some of what I had in my parts bin. But here's my latest build:
2010 Niner EMD Frame, Moondust - $500 package 1 (classifieds)
2008 Rock Shox Reba SL 29er - $500 package 1
Chris King Headset, Pewter - $500 package 1
Thomson Elite Seat Post - $500 package 1
Race Face Stem, 90mm x +-6 - $500 package 1
Niner Aluminum Handlebar - $500 package 1
Race Face Ride Crankset, 22-32 - $60 (Rocky Mountain Cyclery, eBay)
Shimano XTR Shifters, 9 Speed - $250 package 2 (from a buddy of a buddy)
Shimano XTR Cassette, 9 Speed - $250 package 2
Shimano XTR Shadow Rear Derailleur - $250 package 2
Shimano XTR Front Derailleur - $250 package 2
BBG Aluminum Bashguard – parts bin
King Cage, Stainless – parts bin
Avid BB7 Mechanical Disk Brakes, Avid G2 Rotors, 160mm $250 package 2
Avid Speed Dial 7 Brake Levers - $18.50 (Machinery Row Bicycles, Madison)
Crank Brothers Eggbeater SL Pedals – parts bin
Fizik Aliante Sport Saddle – parts bin
Schwalbe Racing Ralph, Front – parts bin
Specialized Fast Trak S-Works, Rear – parts bin
Bontrager Wheels, on loan from a buddy – Free
Total - $828.50
+ Case of Ale Asylum Hopalicious – $30
+ Sausage and onion pizza - $10
=
Final Total - $868.50
Weight – 25.39 lbs.

Everything except the bottle cage, crankset, and brake levers are used. I figure I'll wait a bit and hopefully find a decent wheelset of my own soon. Then, the build will for sure top $1,000, but I don't think that's too bad. I have my eyes on a set of Stans ZTR Crest wheels for $450. So, if I pull the trigger, then my build will be at $1,318.50

Thanks! Very long thought process going into everything and lots of research. Lots of the parts were used (between Craigslist and Ebay) probably 50/50 now. I have to say that I am completely in love with this bike and the way it rides. She definitely climbs better than me but makes me want to be a better man!!! Steel is definitely the way to go if you can find a good frame. If I hadn't pulled the trigger on this (or rather my wife, it was an Xmas present:thumbsup: ) I would have on the Niner or Jamis Dragon.. If I can I will add up cost of what is on there now and figure out how much she "would" have been.

$1620 in my Air 9 build including shipping, completely from scratch. My first bike basically since racing BMX as a kid (had a Hardrock 29 Disc for 2 weeks haha). Only used parts are the fork, tires and seat (came out of dumpster at LBS actually).

Air 9, Easton bars, stem, post and wheels, FSA HS, Hayes Stroker brakes, Reba Race, Race Face cranks, X9 shifer/derailleur.

Hmmm....

Never thought about what my best build from scratch is. Being a bigger guy, all of my bikes are built from scratch though. They do not make bikes for clydesdales. I get everything from either Ebay or Bike Junkie in Bethpage, NY.
I would say the cheapest is my Voodoo Soukri.

Voodoo Soukri 19in frame: $479
Wiley Steel Fork (Ebay): $36
Bonty Race SS Wheelset 20t: $100
Stans Tubeless kit: $50
Geax Saguaro's: $60
RaceFace Crankset 32t: $85
Time Atac Carbon Pedals: $85
RaceFace Next Carbon Post: $60
Specialized Saddle: $45
PZ Racing 100mm 5 deg stem (parts bin)
Salsa Pro Moto Carbon Bar: $60
Ergon grips: $30
Avid Speed Dial 2.0 Levers (parts bin)
Avid Single Digit TI v-brakes (parts bin)

Total cost is $1090 for a light, nimble, rigid single speed that is about 23.5lbs with pedals. Considering I am 250, the bike is plenty light and plenty fast with a smooth ride. It will be little lighter and ride even better once I take the Salsa Delgado/xtr wheelset from my Soma and put it on the Soukri.
