Bent Seatpost?

819 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  gspot
I was doing some drops on my trek 4300 the other day. Not too big, about 3' to flat max. One time I slipped off the pedals and landed hard on my seat. This bent the post, and now the post won't go down any farther into the seat tube.
My Questions:
-Is there anything wrong with riding the post as it is?
- Is the post on it s way to breakage? Its an alu post.
-Time to buy a new post?

Thanks.

With a cr mo seat post i would say bend it back. With alu thats not an option. I would also be nervous about riding it. It would prob be fine for a while but if you had a repeat of this it might shear with your leg coming down on jagged metal. Thats worst case scenario but you shold know. I would be looking for a new seatpost soon. And depending on your weight/style 3' to flat isn't nothing.

good luck
no answers, but I've got a question

Landing on the seat bent the post? That sounds pretty hard.

I'm wondering how your "equipment" stood up to it!
that would be YES to all 3 questions

as for the guy who would bend back a crmo post and keep riding it: good luck to you, sir.
Yea, my inner thighs and prostate / butt area stung for about 15mins after that. My other 'equipment' was luckily spared. This all happened while launching off a 3' deck near my house. My feet came off the pedals in midair (chgeapo plastic pedals), and all my weight landed on the seat, driving the post back and bending it. Landing squirrly also made the post bend. I'm surprised that the seat didn't break, or the frame or rear wheel; it was a hard landing.

Looks like its a new seatpost for me. :(
you've got the wrong bike

the 4300 is a good starter bike but it is not for drop-offs/jumps. You are lucky that only the seatpost was damaged and not the frame, because if the frame broke from that, it is not a warranty issue.

But anyway, do replace that seatpost.

As for your slipping feet, try some toe clips or a pedals with a BMX type platform.
Yea, I know the 4300 is not a drop off / jump bike. I have other bikes for that. That bike was just the ony one convienent. I have many other more expensive and purpose built bikes for that. I have already trashed the rear wheel from jumping the 4300. I don't really care if i break the frame... But thanks for your input anyways.
