Been away for a long time, could use some advice. Broken chainstay on old Fatback. Looking for frame options.

After lurking for the past few days, it is painfully obvious how long I’ve been absent from the scene. Looking for some advice on the following. Thanks in advance.

In about 2008ish I built up and enjoyed a Fatback which served me well for many years. In maybe 2015 I upgraded my fat bike experience but kept the Fatback around as a spare.

Last year my teenage son started riding it and has loved it as a companion to his full suspension Kona XC ride. This past weekend he decided to put the Kona away for the winter and we were planning to begin tearing it down for a much needed maintenance session. He headed out and about 5 minutes after leaving home texted me that he broke the old Fatback, RIP.

So this is where I am at a crossroads of what to do. The chainstay is broken all the way through and I’m not sure if I even trust a repair at this point.

The old girl will be missed, but we are looking for the best option to use most of the parts on a new frame. Being that it is a 170mm rear and straight steerer front, I’m guessing our options are probably limited to buying used. I have been out of the scene for so long that I don’t remember all the specs and what other frames would be the same.

To further complicate things we have a Carver fork with straight steerer that I had planned on installing on the Fatback and would still like to use on a different frame.

What frame would work for us? Also do any of you have a frame sitting around that you would be willing to sell? He is 5’8” and the frame is a Medium, but we would be willing to consider M or L since he is growing at a rapid rate. Also willing to listen to other options if my best bet is to scrap this whole idea and start afresh.

Thanks for listening to my rant, the boy wants his fatty for the winter!

Surly Wednesday should work. Depending on headset choose you can get a fork crown race that works with 1.5 head tube and 1 1/8 steer tube.
Just bought a Framed Minnesota frame second hand yesterday. Got it for a reasonable price so fingers crossed that I can make everything pretty easily swap over.

I’d still be interested if you don’t mind shipping it. PM me some pics and details. Thanks man!

I had one of those frames, and broke it in exactly the same spot! Great bikes, I had a lot of fun on that bike! You could try calling speedway cycles in anchorage ( (907) 222-1967, it looks like they forgot to renew their DNS for their website, it is down at the moment), or Fatback/corvus cycles ( https://corvuscycles.com/ ) and see if they have an old frame laying around. Otherwise it could be hard to find something new, the Wednesday would work, but it might be a while before they are available again.
Don't throw that frame away so fast. I cracked a 9 Zero & frame and my friend Tig welded it. Been fine ever since.

Yeah, I had the bottom bracket to down tube junction welded about 10 years ago and it has been fine. This chainstay break is kinda nasty though, not sure if I would have peace of mind with my son riding it.

Yeah, this is a situation where you really don't want to save a few bucks.

Also consider ICAN SN01 or SN02

Got the boy back on a fatty tonight. This one is actually going to end up being the guest bike. Not too bad for a parts bin bike 🤣 Somehow he ended up swindling a bunch of upgraded parts out of this ordeal and we will be putting his bike together this week.

Damnit just realized I mounted the front tire backwards also 🤦🏻‍♂️
