You're talking about the inner tire periphery. Why would you like this measurement? Why not section width, aspect ratio or O.D. for a given inflation pressure and rim width?

Mtb tire volume is very important.

If you want to buy another mtb tire with more or less volume, a bead to bead specification is very helpful because a rider can actually search and compare new tires to what they own.

Because all those things you mention affect the results, people don't measure them with consistent conditions, and people don't understand the interactions. With b2b measurements you can compare tires more directly without the influence of knob shape, rim width, and inflation pressure. Way more useful.

I've stopped measuring tires any other way. Create a sticky and I'll be happy to add the measurements I have. The Fat Bike forum has this.

If anyone wants to help, use this format ^^ so the thread is searchable.

To keep it organized, list tires for wheel size (separate 26", 29", 650b/27.5").

What is advertised on a tire can change each year so make sure to list what's printed on the sidewall. State new if you prefer to measure before the tire has been used.

i don't get it, do you want b2b measurements or bsd measurements?
Bead to Bead Measurement. I put those there so people will be able to quote for their wheel size and fill in the blanks. I'll update it when I have time to measure some tires. That way a specific tire can be found using the thread search.

What should the template look like?

Maybe each post should have wheel size at the top, then list the measurements for tires you have for that wheel size. Say if you have 26", 29" and 650b / 27.5" wheels, make a new post for each wheel size to keep it organized.

I understand what you're saying, but the inner tire periphery only gives you an idea of the tires' volume. For example, by changing the bias angle of the plies you'll change the section height and section width of the inflated tire, but the inner tire periphery will not change. And of course the tread depth and shoulder must be taken into consideration when looking at the tire O.D. and overall width. I guess it could be useful in comparing one 2.1" tire to another 2.1" tire.

Some things I noticed while measuring, there is a mark near each bead that makes it easier to line up the ruler in a straight line across the tire.. also folding the tire makes it easier to press it flat onto the ruler, and pulled hard to tension so the beads can be fully spread apart. *edit* I also measure "from the 1" for accuracy, some measuring tapes have a clip at the end and aren't accurate from zero..

The differences you mention in the bias angle example would be far less than the rampant dishonesty in tire size ratings that we have today. You're idea of comparing 2.1" tires is evidence of that. Crazy ratings are only getting worse in the fat and + ranges.

I think "an idea" of a tire's volume is what we want anyway. It doesn't tell us everything but it tells us more than "2.1".

BTW, thanks for contributing. I think this can be useful to get a better idea for comparison. Just remembered this Bead to Bead thread and notice people using this- "b2b".

Is this "b2b" term something that some manufactures are starting to use?

Not really that I know of. Maxxis uses that term to describe puncture protection layer that runs the entire outer circumference of the profile. And certain manufacturers of tire imaging equipment use the term to convey that their equipment images the entire profile, including sidewalls.
