What is the purpose of the arch on a suspension fork? How do makers like Maverick get away without having one. Has anyone ever heard of anyone converting a 26" fork for a 29" wheel.

The purpose of the arch is to help ensure that the sliders move as a single unit.

Maverick can get away without one because they use an inverted design where the stantions are at the bottom of the fork and slide into the uppers. They also employ a hub with a 24mm axle to help with the lack of an arch.

You can convert a 26" fork to a 29" fork provided you start with an arch-less design. Such as a Lefty or a Maverick. There isn't enough room under the arch of a 26" fork for a 29" wheel.
