Basic Dropper Question

1391 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Nat
Is it normal to have a little bit of stiction when the post is in the fully up position? On my OEM dropper if I'm riding along and depress the level the post won't move until I bounce on the saddle slightly to overcome the stiction. I've cleaned and lubed it but it doesn't really help.

Would upgrading to something like the OneUp V2 improve this? I'm not opposed to upgrading the dropper but if they all do it I don't want to waste my money since it is more of an annoyance than a real problem. Since I'm pretty new to mtn. biking I don't know if this is normal or not.

Thanks.

That doesn't sound normal. And I do have a OneUp V2 and can confirm it goes up and down as it should. But so does my other KS ETEN dropper. . .
not normal
could be cable length problem

if you get a different dropper
bikeyoke revive is the kinda the smoothest, fastest, best dropper possible
some may say differently, but many agree can't go wrong if you want smooth, and fast return
It's something in the dropper since the cable releases fine it just that the sticks a little when extended.

I know Bike Yoke is highly regarded but was hoping to spend a little less while still getting decent performance which why I was looking at the OneUp.
We can't comment on what may be causing your current OEM dropper to have that issue but here are a few troubleshooting tips to narrow down the issue:
  • Check that your seat collar on the frame is not too tight. Droppers are susceptible to binding up if they are over-clamped in the frame. We recommend 5-6nm for a bolt on (same as most all droppers out there) and if you have a quick release clamp on the frame that may also be the issue. Those do not clamp evenly and tend to over tighten or be too loose. If that is the case tighten it just enough to the post does not spin in the frame.
  • Inspect your cable housing for any kinks, hard bends or damage. Those will not let the inner cable move freely to release the actuator easily. Replace as needed
  • Inspect the inner cable to the lever for any kinks, damage or frays so that it can move freely in the housing
  • Make sure your cable tension is correct to the lever, if there is too much slack it won't actuate the post correctly, but don't make it too tight or the post won't stay in place
  • Try sliding forward or slightly unweightin your seat to make the post go down easier. Depending on your bike, post, weight etc the post may be having a hard time going down if there is too much point load off the back of the saddle, see below image

Hope that helps!

If you do "upgrade" avoid the OneUp... just buy the Revive and never look back. All my OneUp using friends have regretted the purchase, a few have even dumped the OneUp and made the switch to the Revive. The stiction and issues are a non-stop battle.

I've used the Bike Yoke Revive for the last 4 years but just installed a PNW Loam and after my one ride I'd say the action is as smooth and quick as the Revive. With the current 20% off sale you can get a Loam post at a fraction of the cost ($159) of the Revive ($350 or more).

Well, I found out this morning that the compressor in the refrigerator died so there goes the funds for my dropper upgrade plus some. After the new year I'm revisit this. The sale price the PNW looked pretty attractive but then so did all the glowing reviews of the Bike Yoke.

Well now they go on sale after I just bought one. I really dig it though. I got the Rainier instead of the Loam.
