what are the advantages / disadvantages to both, IDK if I can see the bashguards doing as good of a job holding the chain in place but I like the idea of protecting the chain ring

They are meant for 2 totally different things.......................

Bashguard is, well, read what it's called.

Chain guide, well, also read what it's called.

what are you trying to accomplish? keeping your chain on a single ring?

I've used an E13 SRS for years and it works amazing at keeping everything in check. I'm about to try running 2 BBG bash rings (1 on each side of my chainring) on my CX bike to hopefully keep the chain on. not sure how well it'll work but I'll find out soon as they get here.
