Forgive me if this topic has been discussed already, I'm new here.
So what's the attitude on bar end grips? I happen to like them, they're comfortable for climbing hills, or just changing my hand position. I know when they first came out in the 90's they were a little on the long side. Now you can get short ones that are just enough to wrap your hands around. For those that say they are branch or tree catchers, if you're that close to the obstruction, you're going to get hung up on it regardless. Love them or hate them?

Had 'em on my hardtail for a while (Ergon GX1s) but never wound up using them on the trail.

Worked OK providing other hand positions on long rides on paved bike trails when I would ride my MTB to more closely match the speed of my friend's tadpole recumbent.

For trail riding they just wound up adding weight, and yes, getting hung up on branches and added another 1/2" or so to the clearance of the bars when leaned over, so I ditched them in favor of other grips. One of my favorite trails has a good deal of really narrow bits between the trees w/ frequent low hanging branches and scrub though so my experience may have been atypical.

If they work for you, by all means use 'em.

I have Giant's Contactergo bar ends. I wouldn't tour with out them nowadays. I used to have a couple of hand positions I settled into, but now I end up playing with the bar ends as in-riding entertainment.

One of unexpected pluses of the Contactergos is that when I'm pushing the bike, I now grip nothing. Gripping the handle bars when pushing a bike up a steep incline is doubly fatiguing. With the Contactergos I just place the heel of my hand in the concave and grip nothing.

I had bar ends, now I have wide bars, I like the wide bars much better.
Having just switched from nice bar ends (LP Braids) to a wider riser bar, I am never going back. I find that I don't need the "extra hand positions" when my hands are wider apart to more closely match my shoulders and where they would more naturally be. Wider is better for normal riding... but there is nothing wrong with bar ends either.

And it's not the first time board veterans treat the new posters like idiots either.

It's a message board rite of passage.
Every message board has old timers that treat noobs like dirt. For some reason, they think it is better/more clever/funny to post a comment like that one instead of taking less time and just typing what they think which can be done in a sentence. but if it makes the poster feel special, more power to them. And what makes it even more stupid is that the poster is a noob himself.... 140 posts doesn't qualify you for official board ****** baggery... :D ;)

Edit: ****** is edited? That made my day.

Exactly. I'm a message board veteran and a moderator at a minor Bob Dylan message bored (sic). Funny that the board filter caught that, I was recently reading an article that a website did a story on Tyson Gay, and every time his surname was used, it was changed to Homosexual. So he became Tyson Homosexual.

Good old artificial intelligence for ya!
