Azonic Outlaws

Picked up a set from Jenson for $210 (sweet). Problem is, the rear wheel is out of balance (like a car wheel can get). If I grab the cassette and spin it fast it's got a hop in it. I checked the rim and it is true and round. I think it's got a heavy spot in it where it's pinned together. I taped a small bolt to the opposite side (where the stem goes) and it's perfectly smooth then. Don't know if it would be noticeable once it has a tube and tire on it. Is this typical for these rims or did I get a dud?

I would take it back.......my rims don't hop......it might just need a little trueing
Seems odd, but I would try to ride it once and see.
Hmmm, front wheel does the same thing but not as bad. Now I'm guessing it's just the way these are. I want to mount up a tire, tube, and rotor and try it but I'm waiting to hear back from Jenson first (they won't exchange it back if it's used). Here's a little vid of it. I'm trying to hold the wheel as still as possible.

I would mount a tube and tire and see what happens. A tube is obviously heavier where the stem is. That may take care of the balance issue. Making the Outlaws even better than people give them credit for.

you should have just put the tube's stem in the hole, then this thread would have never arised......
I went ahead and put just a tube on it--Presta, all I've got. That alone isn't enough. So I took another one of those presta valve stem nuts and a big fat 1/4" nut and add that to the stem. Lots better.

Hmmm, maybe some of those fancy Dice/Bullet/Lite-Up-Skull valve stem caps are all I need. Or just slap a big ol hunk o' mud on the tire right at the valve stem and call it good. :)

Now I'm off to the "Save some weight" forum to see what effect adding that extra weight will have on my wheel  jk
you will never notice it when riding, most pinned rims have this weight imbalance.
take the extra nut off, there is no need for it. you aren't using your wheels for precision gyroscopes. hell, i'd bet Lance Armstong wouldn't even notice it while he was riding on the street, let alone the bumpy trails you will be riding on....
You're probably right. I was just suprised when comparing it side-by-side to an XT/SingleTrack wheelset I've got. The SingleTrack wheel is just like a big top that you can almost balance on a finger and the Outlaw felt like it's gonna jump outta my hand. The SingleTrack is welded and the Outlaw is pinned. I guess that makes a difference.
