Hi guys.

I have an Outcast 29er that came stock with "Tektro Aluminum" V-brakes. That's all I know about them. There are no markings on them other that "Tektro."

They're a bit flacid, ie, limp and squishy.

I was thinking of upgrading them with the Avid Single Digit 5's. Can anyone here give a good recommendation for the Avids? Will I notice an improvement with these low-end Avid brakes or is it just more of the same? How about if I threw in some Avid Speed Dial 7 levers?

the avid's are good brakes, but new brake pads (koolstop's are good, salmon colored for any wet conditions) may be all you need to get decent braking feel.
I'd be tempted to go that route with the SD levers. Make sure your brake cable housings are all cut properly and not too long, that will contribute to a squishy feel. With rim brakes, I've often used a brake booster plate to improve brake feel.
