Just an fyi, I just read a ride report and one of the riders had the front cable break on his Avid Mech brake, right at the pinch bolt it sounds like. I wasn't there so I can't say if there was any setup issues or if it was just a broken cable.

Anyway, check those cables. And to the naysayers just waiting to jump on this, shut your pie-holes ;-)

PS: Nothing bad happened, besides having to walk down a steep trail.

My whole actuator arm came off the brake. It was not a cable issue. The actuator arm was dangling by the brake cable as my bud went screeching down a steep hill in terror. This has happened to a few people.

I don't think it was you, it happened this weekend near Seattle. It was the cable that broke from the description. The trail drops over 3000' in about 3 miles, with over 100 switchbacks. Hope it didn't happen near the top.

It could happen but it was either a bad installation or lack of maintenance....

Cables usually rip at the head. Last time I had a broken cable I was using side pull brakes.

Same with me, the sidepull brakes breakage. that sucked, was going down a big hill on a roadmaster and the rear brakes were removed a while back because they never worked right and my rear rim was bent bad. Slammed the brakes on and hear a snap, that sucked, I bailed at like 20mph and the biek went through a intersection. Not cool
